thattheywereinclinedtothinkthattheinsistenceonharmony

andbeautywereonlybornoutofarefusaltobehonest.The

Ifweunderstandethicsinthisway,wecansee,Ithink,the

realvalueofethicaltheory.Somepeopletalkasifethical

theoriesgiveusmoralprescriptions.Theythinkweshould

applyethicalprinciplesaswewouldapoultice:after

diagnosingtheillness,weapplytheappropriatedressing.But

thatisamistake.Notheoryprovidesasetofabstract

solutionstoapplystraightforwardly.Ethicaltheoriesare

importantnotbecausetheysolveallmoraldilemmasbutbecause

theyhelpusnoticesalientfeaturesofmoralproblemsandhelp

usunderstandthoseproblemsincontext.
