Twoweekspreviously,mysonhadbeenselectedforascholarshiptoattendthe

collegeofhischoicebecauseofhisacademicaccomplishmentsandcommunityservice.

Ourentirefamilyhadbeeninacelebratorymode.Weweresogratefulforthenews.

Itwassuchawonderfulachievementandrelieftoknowwewouldgetfinancial

assistanceforhiscollegeeducation.

Sowhathadgonewrong?Whysuchasadfaceanddowncasteyes?

Ifinallygottheanswerafterafewhoursofprobing.Ilearnedthatmyson,s

scholarshipnewshadgeneratedjealousyamonghisfriends.Notonlywerethese

classmatesunsupportive,buttheircommentsreflectedresentmentthathewas

thinkingabout“goingaway“tocollege.Sincehewas“anerd"and“sorich”

now,theysaidhemightaswellgoaway,becausehewasn,twelcomewiththemanymore.

Ashismother,IfeltIshouldknowhowtomakeeverythingbetter,butIdidn't.

Themockingandbullyingdidn'tmakesensetome.Ikeptwonderinghowsomething

sopositivehadbeentwistedintosomethingsonegative.Isearchedforwordsof

comfort,butnothingIsaidhelpedmyson.

Whenthescholarshiphadfirstbeenannounced,myson,sschoolwasasexcited

andproudaswewere.Theawardreflectedpositivelyonthecurriculum,teachers,

andstaff.Theschoolhadheldaceremonyfortheannouncement.Thenewshadbeen

printedintheschoolpaper,andanewsreleasewassenttothemedia.Ifeltit

musthavebeenthatpublicitythattriggeredtherecentcomments-and,inthe

ensuingdays,thenegativerhetoricjustkeptcoming.

Forthefirsttimeinhislife,mysondidnotwanttogotoschool.Hebegan

sayinghewasnotevensurehewantedtogotocollege.NothingIsaidordidmade

anydifference.Everyday,heseemedmoredispiritedanddownhearted.Hissadness

hunglikeagraycloudoverourwholefamily.

Nothinghisteacherssaidhadmuchimpacteither.Bothhiscounselorandhis

principalofferedwordsofencouragement,buttherewasnotanychange.Theslump

inhisshouldersandthesadnessinhiseyesremained.

Thetauntsfromhispeersalsokeptcoming.

Afterafewweeks,Ifeltmysonwasbecomingseriouslydepressed.Hisworld

wascrumbling.Whenheannouncedthathewantedtogiveupthescholarship,Iknew

somethinghadtobedone.

Idecidedtogouponemorerungontheacademicladderandtakehimtovisit

thesuperintendentofschools.Ididn'tknowthesuperintendent,havingencountered

himonlyatafewacademicfunctionsandcommunityevents,butnooneelseinthe

schoolsystemhadbeenabletochangemyson'soutlook.Iwasdesperate.

Thesuperintendent?sofficewasinaseparateadministrativebuilding,removed

fromthehigh-schoolcampus.Whenwearrived,itwashardnottobeimpressedby

theimposingandimpressivesurroundings.Itwasaveryprofessional,successful

atmosphere,andIfeltfortunatethisbusymanhadagreedtoseeus.

Ourinitialinteractioncenteredaroundintroductions,schoolactivities,and

congratulationsonmyson,sscholarship.Thesuperintendent,however,seemedto

sensewhatwaswrongandwhywewerethere.Hebegantoaddressmysondirectlyand

maintaineyecontactonlywithhim.Theytalkedaboutthemeritsofeducation,how

itwashardtochangeone'ssurroundings,andthebenefitsofnewchallenges.I

can'trecallhisexactwords,butitwassomethingalongthelinesofthefollowing:

aWheneveryoudecidetogrowalittleandextendyourselfabovethenorm,there

isalwaysadangeryouwon'tbethesame.It'slikethetreesintheforest.When

Irememberwonderingwherehewasgoingwiththis,butInoticedmysonwas

sittingupinhischairandlisteningintently.Hewasobviouslyinterestedinthis

man'sperspectisothesuperintendentwenton.

“WhenIdecidedtobecomethesuperintendentofalltheschoolsinthesystem,

itwasevenworse.Iremembertheresentment***thelackofencouragement.Iknow

whatyou,refeeling,butyoucan'tletthosefeelingskeepyoufromyourgoals
