popularityofcertainlooks,brands,orneighborhoods.Inmanysuchcases,acursorysearchfbr

causesfindsthatsomesmallgroupofpeoplewaswearing,promoting,ordevelopingwhateverit

exceptionofafewcelebritieslikeOprahWinfrey—whoseoutsizepresenceisprimarilyafunction

ofmedia,notinterpersonal,influence-eventhemostinfluentialmembersofapopulationsimply

don'tinteractwiththatmanyothers.Yetitispreciselythesenon-celebrityinfluentialswho,

accordingtothetwo-step-flowtheory,aresupposedtodrivesocialepidemicsbyinfluencingtheir

beingcompromised.And,unlessbankscarrytoxicassetsatpricesthatattractbuyers,revivingthe

bankingsystemwillbedifficult.

AfterabruisingencounterwithCongress,America'sFinancialAccountingStandardsBoard

(FASB)rushedthroughrulechanges.Thesegavebanksmorefreedomtousemodelstovalue
