Berningerandhercolleaguesconductedastudythatlooked
attheabilityofstudentstocompletevariouswriting
tasks—bothonacomputerandbyhand.The
study,publishedin2009,foundthatwhenwritingwithapen
andpaper,participantswrotelongeressaysandmore
completesentencesandhadafasterwordproductionrate.
Inamorerecentstudy,Berningerlookedatwhatrole
spellingplaysinastudentzswritingskillsandfoundthathow
wellchildrenspellistiedtoknowwelltheycanwrite."Spelling
makessomeofthethinkingpartsofthebrainactivewhichhelps
usaccessourvocabulary,wordmeaningandconcepts.Itis
allowingourwrittenlanguagetoconnectwithideas."Berninger
said.
