Objectives:

1.Todevelopstudents'understandingofvariousculturaldifferencesandsimilaritiesthroughtheuseoflanguage.

2.Toenhancestudents'languageskills,particularlyreading,vocabulary,andspeaking.

3.Tofosterstudents'criticalthinkingandanalyticalabilitiesbyanalyzingdiverseculturaltexts.

Materials:

1.Textbook:Unit2materials

2.Handouts:Culturaltextsrelatedtolanguageandculture

3.Worksheets:Vocabularyexercises,prehensionquestions,discussionprompts

4.Audiovisualresources:Videos/recordingsillustratingculturaldifferences/similarities,ifavailable

Procedures:

1.Warm-upActivity(10minutes)

-Beginthelessonbyaskingstudentstodiscussinpairsorsmallgroupsabouttheirownculturalbackgroundsandanyexperiencestheyhavehadwithothercultures.

-Initiateawhole-classdiscussiontosharesomeoftheseexperiencesanddiscusstheimportanceofunderstandingculturaldifferences.

2.Pre-readingActivity(15minutes)

-Providestudentswithashortreadingpassageaboutaparticularculturalaspectrelatedtolanguage(e.g.,greetings,manners,taboos).

-Engagestudentsinathink-pair-shareactivity,wheretheyindividuallyreadthepassage,discusswithapartner,andthensharetheirthoughtswiththeclass.

-Encouragestudentstoidentifyandreflectonsimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweentheirowncultureandtheonedepictedinthepassage.

3.Reading&Vocabulary(30minutes)

-Assignstudentsthemainreadingpassagefromthetextbookrelatedtoculturaldifferencesandsimilarities.

-Givestudentsvocabularyhandoutsorworksheetstointroduceandpracticeessentialvocabularyrelatedtothereading.

-Instructstudentstoreadthepassageindividuallyandsilently.

-Conductaclassdiscussiontocheckprehensionandreinforceunderstandingofthetextbyaskingstudentsprehensionquestionsandencouragingthemtojustifytheiranswersusingevidencefromthetext.

4.AnalyzingCulturalTexts(20minutes)

-Providestudentswithadditionalculturaltexts(songs,poems,excerptsfromliterature)orvideoclipsillustratinglanguageandculture.

-Dividestudentsintosmallgroupsandassigneachgroupaculturaltextforanalysis.

-Instructstudentstoidentifytheculturalaspectsdepictedinthetext(e.g.,values,traditions,customs)anddiscusshowlanguagereflectstheseculturaldifferences/similarities.

-Eachgrouppresentstheirfindingstotheclass,leadingtoawhole-classdiscussiononthesignificanceoflanguageinshapingculture.

5.SpeakingandDiscussion(15minutes)

-Providestudentswithdiscussionpromptsrelatedtothetopicofculturaldifferencesandsimilarities.

-Dividestudentsintopairsorsmallgroupsandinstructthemtodiscusstheprompts,exchangingtheirideasandexperiences.

-Encouragestudentstosupporttheiropinionswithexlesandevidence.

-Monitorthediscussionsandprovidelanguagesupportasneeded.

-Wrapuptheactivitybyhavingafewpairs/groupssharetheirdiscussionswiththewholeclass.

6.SummaryandReflection(10minutes)

-Recapthemainpointscoveredinthelessonandemphasizetheimportanceofunderstandingdifferentcultures.

-Havestudentsindividuallywriteashortreflectiononwhattheyhavelearnedandhowtheycanapplythisunderstandingintheirdailylives.
