②Bigchallenges,however,cansometimesleadtogreatsolutions.Inthe1950s,theEgyptiangovernmentwantedtobuildanewdamacrosstheNileinordertocontrolfloods,produceelectricity,andsupplywatertomorefarmersinthearea.Buttheproposalledtoprotests.WaterfromthedamwouldlikelydamageanumberoftemplesanddestroyculturalrelicsthatwereanimportantpartofEgypt’sculturalheritage.Afterlisteningtothescientistswhohadstudiedtheproblem,andcitizenswholivednearthedam,thegovernmentturnedtotheUnitedNationsforhelpin1959.

③AmitteewasestablishedtolimitdamagetotheEgyptianbuildingsandpreventthelossofculturalrelics.Thegroupaskedforcontributionsfromdifferentdepartmentsandraisedfundswithintheinternationalmunity.Expertsinvestigatedtheissue,conductedseveraltests,andthenmadeaproposalforhowthebuildingscouldbesaved.Finally,adocumentwassigned,andtheworkbeganin1960.

⑤Whentheprojectendedin1980,itwasconsideredagreatsuccess.Notonlyhadthecountriesfoundapathtothefuturethatdidnotrunovertherelicsofthepast,buttheyhadalsolearntthatitwaspossibleforcountriestoworktogethertobuildabettertomorrow.
