回家住"爸媽旅館"

Statistics,aboutaquarterofyoungadultsaged20-34liveathome,andthat

figurehasbeengrowing.

Asurveybyapricecomparisonwebsitefoundthat18%ofadultchildren

intheUKsaidtheyweremovingbackhomebecauseofdebt,comparedwith

8%lastyear.Moreyoungpeoplehadlosttheirjobs,andotherscouldn't

affordtheirrentcomparedwiththepreviousyear.So,it'seasytoseewhy

they'reincreasinglybecominghomebirds.

TheBBC/sLucyHookerexplainsthatmanyreturningadultchildren

enjoyhomecomforts.Theseincludecookedmeals,afullfridgeandcleaning,

aswellastheirbillsbeingcoveredbywhatiscommonlycalled'thehotelof

mumanddad'.Butforthe'hoteliers',that'smumanddad,thesurveyfound

theaveragecosttothemhasgoneupsharply,andthattheyaresacrificing

luxuriesandholidaystolookaftertheirzbigkids'.EmmaCraigfromMoney

supermarketsays"they'retryingtolookaftertheirchildrenmore.Ifyour

childcomeshomeandyouseethemstrugglingfinancially,youfeelmore

awkwardaskingthemforrentortocontribute.Ittugsonyour

heartstringsmore.”

Withparentssplashingoutaround£1,886ontakeawayfood,buying

newfurnitureandupgradingtheirWi-Fiforthebenefitoftheiroffspring,

it'seasyforthereturningchildrentoputtheirfeetupandmakethemselves

easilyreplaceablewithsomethingmoreon-trend.Andthatcreates

problems.

First,there'stheenvironmentalcost.Manufacturinganykind

oftextilecostsresources.Forexample,syntheticfibres,whicharemade

fromplastic,havealargercarbonfootprintthannaturalones.Naturalfibres,

althoughmorecarbon-efficient,stillrequiremorewatertogrow.And

furtherresourcesareusedastheclothisdyed,madeintoclothingand

transportedtoretailforsale.Secondly,thefast-fashionindustryisunder

pressuretoputthelatesttrendingitemsonshelvesfast,whichcanleadto

workersbeingexploitedandforcedtolabourinpoorworkingconditions.In

countriessuchasBangladesh,EthiopiaandthePhilippines,workersarepaid

wagesthatareinsufficienttoliveon.OneworkerinEthiopiatoldtheBBC

thattheyhadtodealwithintolerableconditions,suchaswithheldovertime

payments,verbalabuse,andunsanitarytoilets.

SowhatcanbedoneintheUKtoreduceclotheswaste?TheEAChas

recommendedeighteenimprovementstotheUKgovernment,from

increasingtaxonpurchasestofundrecyclingcentrestointroducing

moresewinglessonsinschools,encouragingamakedoandmendattitude

whenthingsbecomethreadbare.
