almostexclusivelywithonefixedfluteonly(usuallyB-orC-flute).
Today,aroundthreequarters
ofallcompaniesproducing
corrugatedboardusemachines
thathaveatleastthreetosixsetsofcorrugatingrolls.Usually,the
additionalinvestmentneededfor
thepurchaseofanewSingleFacerisquicklyamortised(particularly
fthelife-cycleoftheexisting
machinereachesitsnaturalend).Asarule,themoreextensive
therangeofdifferentqualitiesofboardproducedbyacompany,
thequickertheamortisationof
theinvestment.Theproportionofdoublewallboardwithlight-weightpapersisbecomingincreasinglyimportant,whereasheavysinglewallgradesarefoundlessofteninthemarket.
InsteadofproducingasingleCflute,plantsincreasinglyuse
combinationsofEandDflutes.Ofcourse,thequalityofboardtobeprovidedbysuchacombinationmustbeatleastcomparableto
thatofasingleCflute(that'soneofthecustomerrequirementsithastomeet).Whatcounts,isthereductionoftherequiredmaterialandthesignificantlyimproved
printingpotential.
Throughtheincreaseduseofdoublewallboard,flutechanges,too,arebecomingmoreandmore
important.Thehighernumberof
flutechangesisaresultofboth
theincreaseindoublewallboard
usedandthegrowingcomplexity
ofproductionprocesses.While
previously,sixtoeighthoursof
continuoususewerenotuncommonbeforeaflutewaschanged,manymanufacturerstodaychangeflutesbetweenthreeandfivetimesper
8-hourshift.Inotherwords,the
so-calledfluteruns'arebecomingshorterandshorter.Thesechangeshaveresultedinthefollowing
requirementstobemetbySingleFacers:
1.Formanufacturerstobeabletoprocessdifferentproduction
ordersasquicklyandefficiently
aspossible,flutechangesneedtoperformedwithintheshortesttime;
2.Sincecorrugatingrollsare
stillhotafteruse,thesafetyfactorisofparticularimportance.This
meansthatmachineoperatorsneedtobeprotectedfrominjuryduringthechangeofcorrugatingrolls.
Oncetherequirements
havebeenspecifiedandthe
correspondingsolutionsbeenfound,thefollowingtaskistheappropriatetransferofthese
solutionstothecorrespondingcategoriesofSingleFacers.
Toharmonisethetechnical
andeconomicrequirementsofcorrugatedmanufacturers,BHS
CorrugatedhasintroducedtwodifferentcorrugatingrollchangesystemsforitsAdvancedFacer
AF-PandModulFacerMF-B.
“IntheAdvancedFacerAF-P,thesetofcorrugatingrollsislocatedonakindofshuntingstationnexttothemachine",explainsAreaSalesManagerThomasMurr.“Onthe
slidingcarriage,therearethree
setsofcorrugatingrolls,neatandtidy,ontheso-calledcassette
magazine.Theyarelocatedonthedrivesideofthecorrugator,wherethereareusuallynooperating
personnel."Theimportantpoint,accordingtoMrMurr,isthatthecorrugatingrollsalwaysneed
tobeintroducedatanangleof
90degreestothemachine's
productiondirection.“Technically,it'saprettycomplicated
procedure,especiallyfornewandinexperiencedstaff.”
TheAF-Prelievestheoperatorofthiseffort.Here,thecorrugatingrollsetsaredirectlylocatedon
thecassettemagazine—atthe
requiredangleof90degrees.
Accordingly,thecorrugatingrollsetsnolongerneedtobealignednafurtherprocessstepbutcanbeinsertedonanaxisviatherailsystem.Eachmagazineiscapable

rolls(stillaround150℃)onthe
operatorsidewithatrolleyany
more—thisway,theriskofburnsforoperatorsisconsiderably
reduced.”
Changingthecorrugating
rollstakesapproximatelyten
minutes.Thisisabout30-50percentfasterthanchangingthem
fromtheoperatorside.MrMurrcontinues,“TheModulFacerMF-B,ontheotherhand,hasaradicallydifferentchangesystem.Here,
twosetsofcorrugatingrollsarealreadyintegratedinthemachine.Whenchangingthem,thesets
donotneedtoberemovedfromthemachinebutaresettotherespectiveworkingpositionvia
swiveldrives."Thegreatadvantageofthisisthatoperatorsofthe
ModulFacerforabouteightypercentoftheirorders,donotneedtochangecartridgesoutsideof
themachine.Asimplepushofabuttonisenough—andonesetofcorrugatingrollsisswivelled
in,whiletheothersetisswivelledout.Ifrequiredalargepartoftheremainingordervolumecanbe
donewith,analogoustotheAF-P,theoptionalinsertionofathirdsetofcorrugatingrolls.
Theflexibilitywhichthissolutionoffersisenormous.Forexample,thechangeovertimeforthetwo
setsofcorrugatingrollsisjust
betweenthreeandfiveminutes.
