ToNorma,theinstructoralwayssaid,“Seemeafterclass.〃Then,
whenshetriedtoseehimafterclass,hewouldsaythathewaslate
foranappointment."Howaboutnexttime?”hewouldsay.Hewas
alwaystoobusytohelpher.

Whileshewascleaningthewhiteboardafterherclassendedlast
night,thefirealarmwentoff.Insteadofleavingthebuilding
immediately,shewalkedaroundtoseewhattheproblemwas.The
blaringalarmsoundedlikethebusysignalonaphone,but1,000
timeslouder.Theschoolseemedtobeempty.Thenshewalkedbyone
room,andsawaboutsevenstudentsinside.
Justthenthenightsupervisorcameby.Shetoldeveryonetoleave
immediately.Thestudentswerepackingtheirhair-careequipment
intotheirbags.Thenightsupervisorwaitedimpatiently.Finally,
afteralmostfiveminutes,allthestudentsandtheirteacherleft
thebuilding.Theyapologizedforbeingsoslow.
Thefiremenneverarrived.Instead,aschoolpoliceofficershowed
up.Hewalkedaroundtheareawiththesupervisor.Itwasafalse
alarm.Theofficerusedhiskeytofinallyturnoff
