peoplemisunderstandtheconsequencesofdistantsocialconnections.Theyfoundthat
manypeoplefeeluncomfortableandintimidatedtalkingtoothersandtheirresearch
suggestedthatwhenwemakeaninitialconversation"we
consistentlyunderestimatehowmuchanewpersonlikesus."Itseemswecarry
anegativevoiceinourheadtellingusallthethingsthatcouldgowrongandwhy
someonewouldn'twanttoconversewithus.
TheirresearchinvolvedanexperimentwithagroupofChicagocommutersandfound
that”everyparticipantinourexperimentwhoactuallytriedtotalktoastrangerfound
thepersonsittingnexttothemwashappytochat."Fromthisandotherresearch,the
conclusionisthatconnectingwithstrangersissurprisinglypleasantandithasapositive
impactonourwellbeing.GillianSandstrom,asocialpsychologistfromEssexUniversityin
