"GettingAlongwithOthers"isapopulartopicinEnglishteaching,especiallyforyoungstudents.ForGrade8students,it'scrucialtolearnaboutrespectingdiversity,buildingfriendships,andresolvingconflictsinanappropriateandconstructivemanner.Inthisteachingplan,wewillcoverseveralsubtopics,includingactivelistening,sharingopinions,dealingwithdifferentpersonalities,andproblem-solving.
I.Warm-upActivity:ValuesDiscussion
Tostartthelesson,wecanaskstudentstoreflectontheirpersonalvaluesandbeliefs.Theycanworkinpairsorsmallgroupsandsharetheirthoughtsonthefollowingquestions:

Oneoftheessentialaspectsofcommunicationisactivelistening;thatis,payingattentiontowhatotherssay,askclarifyingquestions,andshowempathyandunderstanding.Topracticeactivelistening,wecanuseasimpleexercisecalled"DescribeYourWeekend."Studentsworkinpairs,andoneofthemdescribestheirweekendactivitieswhiletheotherlistensattentively.After1-2minutes,theyswitchroles,andthelistenerbecomesthespeaker.Then,weasksomefollow-upquestions,like:

Anothercriticalspeakingskillisexpressingopinions,especiallywhenthetopiciscontroversialoropentointerpretation.Topracticethisskill,wecanuseadiscussionpromptthatrelatestocurrenteventsorsocialissues.Forexample,"Shouldtherebeaglobalcarbontaxtocombatclimatechange?"or"Shouldschoolsallowstudentstowearuniformsorcasualclothes?"
Studentscanworkinpairsorsmallgroupstobrainstormargumentsfordifferentperspectives,suchasproandcon,ormultiplepointsofview.Then,theycanreporttheirviewstotheclassoranothergroupandlistentofeedbackorcounterarguments.Beforeandafterthediscussion,wecanasksomereflectionquestions,suchas:

Anotherchallengeingettingalongwithothersisdealingwithdifferentpersonalitiesthatmayclashorcausetensions.Toaddressthisissue,wecanusearole-playorcasestudythatsimulatesaconflictbetweentwocharacterswithdifferenttraits,suchasintrovertedvs.extroverted,detail-orientedvs.big-picture,oremotionalvs.rational.
Studentscanworkinpairsorsmallgroupstoactoutthescenario,usinglanguagefunctionssuchasmakingsuggestions,negotiating,andcompromising.Then,theycananalyzethesituationandapplysomeconflictresolutionstrategies,suchas:
