Uponcompletionofthischapter,youshouldbeableto:PART/01Autonomyistheabilitytotakechargeofone’sownlearning.Thisabilityisnotinbornbutmustbeacquiredeitherby“natural”meansor(asmostoftenhappens)byformallearning,inasystematic,deliberateway.(Holec,1981)Themaincharacteristicsofautonomyasanapproachtolearningarethatstudentstakesomesignificantresponsibilityfortheirownlearningoverandaboverespondingtoinstruction.(Boud,1988)Learnerswhohavereachedapointwheretheyareabletodefinetheirowngoalsandcreatetheirownlearningopportunitieshave,bydefinition,becomeautonomous.(Nunan,1995)
