beenshownatinternationalartgalleries,manyoftheirtapestries（掛毯）arenowbeingdisplayedunder

oneroofforthefirsttime,atanexhibitioninJohannesburg.

Theirstorybeganin2000,whenDr.CarolHofmeyrmovedfromJohannesburgtoHamburg.She

foundthatthetownwasstrugglingwithhighunemploymentandthatlocalwomenweredesperatetofind

waystofeedtheirfamilies.Havingstudiedembroideryherself,shehopedthatpassingonthatknowledge

tolocalwomenwouldhelpempowerthem.

Fromhumblebeginnings*moreandmorewomenheardabouttheprojectthroughwordofmouth.

Now,over150womenarepartoftheproject.Sellingtheirworksprovidesasourceofincome,butthe

projecthasalsocreatedasupportsystemforthewomen.

Initially,thewomenstartedoutsimplycreatingcushions（坐墊）andsmallhandbagstoselltotourists.

Eventually,theystartedreceivingtasksforlargerpieces.Theyweregivenpanelsaboutameterinsizeto
