KeiskammaArtProjectwascreatedtoteachlocalwomenembroidery(刺繡)skillstohelpthemata

toughtimeeconomicallyandsocially,butunexpectedlyithasgrownintosomethingmuchbigger.Having

beenshownatinternationalartgalleries,manyoftheirtapestries(掛毯)arenowbeingdisplayedunder

oneroofforthefirsttime,atanexhibitioninJohannesburg.

Theirstorybeganin2000,whenDr.CarolHofmeyrmovedfromJohannesburgtoHamburg.She

foundthatthetownwasstrugglingwithhighunemploymentandthatlocalwomenweredesperatetofind

waystofeedtheirfamilies.Havingstudiedembroideryherself,shehopedthatpassingonthatknowledge

tolocalwomenwouldhelpempowerthem.

Fromhumblebeginnings*moreandmorewomenheardabouttheprojectthroughwordofmouth.

Now,over150womenarepartoftheproject.Sellingtheirworksprovidesasourceofincome,butthe

projecthasalsocreatedasupportsystemforthewomen.

Initially,thewomenstartedoutsimplycreatingcushions(坐墊)andsmallhandbagstoselltotourists.

Eventually,theystartedreceivingtasksforlargerpieces.Theyweregivenpanelsaboutameterinsizeto

workonathome.Byjoiningthecompletedpanelstogether,theycreatedthefirstoftheirlargeworksand

oneoftheirmostcelebrated,',TheKeiskammaTapestry",whichtellsthehistoryoftheXhosapeoplewho
