Sally的生日Sally’sbirthdaywasapproaching,andtheexcitement

thatusuallyfilledherheartwasnowreplacedwithdisappointmentandstress.Turningelevenwasabigdeal,andshehadalwayscelebrateditwithagrandpartysurroundedbyherfriends.

However,thisyearwasdifferent.Theburdenofexcessivehomeworkandherparents’

strugglingbusinessweighedheavilyonher,forcingSallytomakethedifficultdecisionofnothavingabirthdayparty,eventhoughitwasaneventsheenjoyeddearly(verymuch)everyyear.Oneday,duringbreak,herbestfriend,Jane,withacuriouslookinhereyes,approached.“Areyougoingtohaveabirthdaypartythisyear?”Janeasked,sensingSally’ssadness.“No,”Sallysighedandrepliedsadly,“There’sjusttoomuchgoingonandmyparentsaregoingthroughfinancialdifficulties.”Shesmiledweakly,tryingtoconceal(掩飾(情感))herimmense(極大的;巨大的)disappointmentandstress,butJanesawthrough(看穿;識(shí)破)herpretence(假裝)easily.Janenoddedthoughtfully(若有所思地點(diǎn)了點(diǎn)頭)anddidnotsayanything.Afterthebreak,Sallysawhertalkingtooneoftheirclassmates,Sarah,secretively.Curious,Sallywentovertothem,butassoonasJanesawher,shequicklywalkedaway.Sallywasstartled(使受驚)byJane’sstrangeactionsandturnedtowardsSarah.“Whatdidshesay?”Sallyasked.However,SarahsimplyshruggedandwalkedawaywithJane,leavingSallystandingthere,feelingleftout(被冷落)andanxious.Whatishappening?Sallywonderedanxiously.Aretheykeepingsomethingfromme?AsSally’sbirthdaydrewnearer(臨近),Janewasoftenfoundchattingsoftlywithherotherclassmates.WheneverSallywentovertothem,theywouldjustwalkawayortellherthattheyweretalkingaboutasecretwhichSallywasnotallowedtoknow.
