IWhatisdefinition?

Intalkingwithotherpeople,wesometimesofferinformaldefinitionstoexplainjustwhatwe

meanbyaparticularterm.Thatis,toavoidconfusionormisunderstanding,wehavetodefinea

word,term,orconceptwhichisunfamiliartomostreadersoropentovariousinterpretations.

Suppose,forexample,wesaytoafriend:"Forrestisreallyaninconsiderateperson.^^We

mightthenexplainwhatwemeanby“inconsiderate“bysaying,C6Heborrowedmyaccounting

bookovernightbutdidn'treturnitforaweek.AndwhenIgotitback,itwascoveredwithcoffee

stains.

Definitionistheexplanationofthemeaningofawordorconcept,anditisalsoamethodof

developinganessay.

II.Thewaystodefineawordorterm

Therearethreebasicwaystodefineawordorterm

A.TogiveasynonymForexample:'Tomendistorepair.Or“Afellowisamanora

boy.”

B.Touseasentence(oftenwithanattributiveclause)Forexample,inkmaybedefineina

sentence:"Inkiscoloredwaterwhichweuseforwriting.9,

C.TowriteaparagraphorevenanessayButasynonymyorasentencecannotgivea

satisfactorydefinitionofanabstracttermwhosemeaningiscomplex.Wehavetowritea

paragraphoranessaywithexamplesornegativeexamples(whatthetermdoesnotmean),

withanalogiesorcomparisons,withclassificationorcause-effectanalysis.

III.Whenwegiveadefinition,weshouldobservecertainprinciples:

1.First,weshouldavoidcirculardefinitions."'Democracyisthedemocraticprocess.And

"astronomerisonewhostudiesastronomy^^arecirculardefinition.

2.Second,weshouldavoidlonglistsofsynonymsifthetermtobedefinedisanabstractone.

Forexample:Byimagination,Imeanthepowertoformmentalimagesofobjects,thepower

toformnewideas,thegiftofemployingimagesinwriting,andthetendencytoattribute

realitytounrealthings,situationsandstates.

3.Third,weshouldavoidloadeddefinition,Loadeddefinitionsdonotexplaintermsbutmake

animmediateappealforemotionalapproval.

Adefinitionlike:5Bystateenterprise,Imeanhighcostandpoorefficiency.9,isloadedwith

pejorativeemotionalconnotation.Conversely,“Bystateenterprise,Imeanoneofthegreat

blessingofdemocraticplanning95isloadedwithfavorableemotionalconnotation.Such

judgementscanbevigorioustoadiscussion,buttheyleadtoargument,notclarification,when

offeredasdefinition.

IV.TypesofdeHnition

1.Standard/Formaldefinitiondenotationisaword'score,direct,andliteralmeaning.

2.Connotative/PersonalmeaningExplainswhatyoumeanbyacertaintermorconceptthat

couldhavedifferentmeaningsforothers.

Ontheotherhand,connotationistheimplied,suggestedmeaningofaword;itreferstothe

emotionalresponsestimulatedbyassociationsthewordcarrieswithit.

A.ForAmericans,Watergateisassociatedwithapoliticalscandalthatmeansdishonesty.

Andmorewordsarecreatedwiththesuffix-gatetomeansomescandalinEnglishnow,

thus,IranGate,IntelligenceGate

B.Dogs,inChineseculture,maybequiteanegativeimage.Itisinsultingtocallsomeonea

dog.Whataboutthewesternpeople?Intheireyes,dogislovelyandhasgoodassociated

meanings.Theysay“Loveme,lovemydog.”

C.ImperialismmeanstousChinesequitenegative.Someofthewesternpeoplemaybe

proudofbeingimperialandimperialismitself.

D.Peopleeverywheremayalsosharesomeconnotationsforsomewords.Theyaregeneral

connotations.Mothermeanslove,care,selfless,etc.

Connotationcanmakeallthedifference.Itisthemirrorofyourattitude.

3.Extendeddefinition--isanessaylengthpieceofwritingusingthismethodofdevelopment.

V.Howtowriteanextendeddefinition

Follow4rulesforagooddefinition:

1.Don'tusethewords"when'"where”,givingadefinition.Acommonpracticeistodefine

thenounwithanoun,adjectivewithadjectiveandsoon.

2.Remember,thatdefinitionisnotarepetition.

3.Usesimpleandwell-knownterminyourexplanation.

4.Pointoutthedistinguishingfeaturesoftheterm.

I.Whatistitle?

Atitleisaverybriefsummaryofwhatyourpaperisabout.Itisoftennomorethan

severalwords.Youmayfinditeasiertowritethetitleafteryouhavecompletedyour

paper.

Atitlemaybeaphrasewhichcanindicateatopicofinterest(i.e.yourfocus)andatthe

sametimepointtowardsaparticularkindofdiscussion(yourmodeofargument).

Accordingly,yourtitleneedsnotonlytoindicatewhattheessaywillbeabout,butalsoto

indicatethepointofviewitwilladoptconcerningwhateveritisabout.

however:disappointment.Noonegetsthroughlifewithoutexperiencingmany

Jack'sheartpoundsashecastspanickylooksaroundtheclassroom.Hedoesn'trecognize

theprofessor,hedoesn'tknowanyofthestudents,andhecan,tevenfigureoutwhatthe

subjectis.Infrontofhimisatest.Atthelastminutehisroommateawakenshim.It'sonly
