CourseDescription

Thiscourseisdesignedforundergraduatestudentswhoarenon-nativespeakersofEnglishinordertodeveloptheirlisteningandspeakingskillsinthetargetlanguage.Activitieswillincludepracticingvocabularyandcoregrammarstructures,speakingongiventopicsandanalysingthepresenteddata.Studentwillbeexpectedtodotheirhomeworkinaspokenform,participateactivelyintheclassroomactivitiesandfulfilalltheothergivenassignments.TheoverallgradefromthecoursewillbeestablishedonthebasisoftheprogresstheSsmakethroughoutthedurationofthecourse.Actualcontentofthecoursewilldependonthepreliminaryneedsandlevelanalysis,andisasubjecttochangeasthecourseproceeds.Thoseareonlysamplemodules.

CourseObjectives

Bytheendofthiscourse,learnersshouldbeableto:

(a)communicatewithothersinthetargetlanguageinpracticalsituations;

(b)expresstheirthoughtswithgreaterfluencyandaccuracy;

(c)handlethemselvesinthetargetlanguageinavarietyofwrittencontexts,fromshorttolongforms;

(d)producegrammaticallycorrectsentences;

Attendanceisrequired.Youareexpectedtoactivelyparticipateinclassactivities.

(2)Assignments

Atfewseparatetimesduringthesemester,youwillberesponsibleforfinishingaspokenassignmentfromeitherthethingsthatwerecoveredintheclassroombeforeorthematerialofyourchoice.Theinstructorwillprovideindividualfeedback.ItwillbestoredandwillprovidefurtherfeedbackforSsontheirprogressthroughoutthecourse.

CourseExpectations

AttendanceandParticipation

Sincethiscourseisanoralcommunicationcourse,attendanceandactiveparticipationismandatory.Fullattendancemeansarrivingontime,remainingpresent,activelyparticipatinginclassdiscussions,andcompletingassignmentsandreadingsbeforetheclassmeets.Youmaybeabsentforoneclasswithoutpenaltytoyourattendancegrade;anyadditionalabsenceswillaffectyourgrade.Ifanabsenceisunavoidable,pleasespeakwiththeinstructorpriortoyourabsencewherepossible.

TechnologyintheClassroom

PleasedoNOTbringyourlaptopstoclass(unlessweareusingthemforaspecificclassactivity).Cellphonesshouldbesilencedandputaway(i.e.,notondesktopsorlaps)forthedurationofclass.

LateAssignments

If,forsomereason,youareunabletoturninanassignmentontime,pleasediscusstheissuewiththeinstructorasearlyaspossible.Lateassignmentswithnoexplanationmaylosepoints.
