Intheearly19thcentury,NewEnglandfarmers,tiredofwrestlingwiththeirpoorlandjourneyedtothe

hewantedwouldhavetocutdeepintothesoilatasharpanglesothatdirtwouldfalloff,yetitcouldnotputtoo

muchburdenonthehorsespullingit.Afterseveralexperiments,Deereconstructedanewplowthatfeaturedwood

handles.ltprovedasuccess.Unliketheoldironplows,Deere'snotonlyhadabladefromwhichdirtfellaway

cleanly,butitalsoturnedthesoilmoreefficientlyandquickly.DemandfbrDeere'splowsincreasedsharply,but

productionwaslimitedbytheshortageofpolishedsteel.Initially,Deerecouldonlyproduceafewplowseach

NorthFaceJapantoproducealimited-editionrunof50"MoonParka'jacketstocelebratethe50thanniversaryof

themoonlandings.Butduringthedesignprocess,theteamdiscoveredthatspidersilkbecamesmallerwhen

exposedtowater,andhadtotransformtheproteintomakethefibersuitablefbranoutdoorjacket,whichtook

themfouryearstoperfect.

Currently,thecompanyusessugarcaneandcomfbritsfermentationprocess一cropsthatuselargevolumes

oflandandchangefoodresources.Toreduceitsenvironmentalimpact,Spiberisdevelopingaprocesscalled

“biospherecirculation^thatwilltransformdesertedclothesmadefromnaturalmaterialslikecottonintothe

sugarsneededfbrfermentation.

Withapproximately100billionyen($783million)infunding,Spiberplanstosignificantlyspeedupits

productionofproteinpolymersbytheendof2025.“Massproductionwillhelpbringthepriceoffibersdownand
