undpowerful,asRayFriedmanofVanderbiltUniversityandhiscolleaguesdiscovered.

TheytestedfourseparategroupsatfourkeystagesofObama'spresidentialcampaign.Eachgroupconsisted

ofaround120adullsofsimilarageandeducation,andthe(cstassessedtheirlanguageskills.Attwoofihcscstages,

whenObama'ssuccesswaslessthancertain,thetestsshowedacleardifferencebetweenthescoresofthewhite

andblackparticipants—anaverageof12.1outof20,comparedio8.8,forexample.WhentheObainafeverwasat

itsheight,however,theblackparticipantsperformedmuchbetter.ThosewhohadwatchedObama'sacceptance

speechastheDemocrats'presidentialcandidateperformedjustaswell,onaverage,asthewhitesubjects.Aflerhis

Dramaticshift

Whalcanexplainthisdramaticshift?Atthestartof(helest,theparticipantshadiodeclaretheirraceandwere

toldtheirresultswouldbeuseetoassesstheirstrengthsandweaknesses.Thisshouldhaveprimedthesubjects

with"stereotypethreat"-ananxietythattheirresultswillconfinnnegativestereotypes,whichhasbeenshownto

damagetheperformanceofAfricanAmericans.

Obama'ssuccessesseemedtoactasashieldagainstthis."Wesuspecttheyfeltinspiredandenergisedbyhis

victory,sothestereotypethreatwouldn'tproveadistraction,"saysFriedman.

Lingeringracism

IftheObamaeffectispositiveforAfricanAmericans,howisitaffectingtheirwhitecompatriots(同t超)?Is

theexperienceofhavingacharismatic(有魅力的)blackpresidentmodifyinglingeringracistattitudes?Thereis

noeasyway(omeasureracismdirectly;insteadpsychologistsassesswhatisknownas"implicitbias",usinga

computer-basedtestthatmeasureshowquicklypeopleassociatepositiveandnegativewords—suchas"love"or

"evil"—withphotosofblackcrwhitefaces.Asimilartestcanalsomeasurehowquicklysubjectsassociate

stereotypicaltraitssuchasathleticskillsormentalability——withaparticulargroup.

Inastudythatwillappear:ntheJournalofExperimentalSocialPsychology,Plant'steamtested229students

duringtheheightoftheObamafever.Theyfoundthatimplicitbiashasfallenbyasmuchas90%comparedwith

thelevelfoundinasimilarstudyin2024."That'sanunusuallylargediop,"Plantsays.

Whiletheteamcan'tbesuretheirresultsareduesolelytoObama,theyalsoshowed(hatthosewiththelowest

biaswerelikelytosubconsciouslyassociateblackskincolourwithpoliticalwordssuchas"government"or

"president".ThissuggeststhatObamawasstronglyontheirmind,saysPlant.

BrianNosekoftheUniversityofVirginiainCharlottesville,whorunsawebsitethatmeasuresimplicitbias

"PeoplenowhavetheopportunityofexpressingsupportforObamaeveryday,"saysDanielEffronat

StanfordUniversityinCalifornia."Ourresearcharousestheconcernthatpeoplemaynowbemorelikelytoraise

negativeviewsofAfricanAmericans."Ontheotherhand,hesays,itmayjustencouragepeopletotalkmore

honestlyabouttheirfeelingsregardingraceissues,whichmaynotbesuchabadthing.

Anotherpartofthestudysuggestsfarmoreisatstakethanthemereexpressionofviews.TheObamaeffect

mayhaveanegativeside.JustoneweekafterObamawaselectedpresident,participantswerelessreadytosupport

policiesdesignedtoaddressracialinequalitythantheyhadbeentwoweeksbeforetheelection.

Hugeobstacles

Itcould,ofcourse,alsobethatObama'ssuccesshelpspeopletoforgetthatadisproportionatenumberof

blackAmericansstillliveinpovertyandfacehugeobstacleswhentryingtoovercomethesecircumstances.
