A.Definition

Codingisabranchofmathematicsandcomputersciencedealingwiththeefficientrepresentationofdata.Itwasdevelopedinthelate1950sandearly1960s.Codingisusedinavarietyofapplications,includingdatastorage,imageprocessing,digitalsignalprocessing,andcommunications.Codingtechniquescangreatlyreducetheamountofdatathatneedstobestoredandtransmitted.

B.BasicConcepts

ThemainconceptsofCodingarecoding,signaling,modulation,codingrate,codingefficiency,andentropy.Codingistheprocessoftransformingthemessagefromthesourceintoaformthatcanbeunderstoodbythedestination.Signalingistheprocessofconveyinginformationthroughamediumoveracommunicationlink.Modulationistheprocessofvaryingsomeaspectofasignalinordertotransmitinformation.Thecodingrateisthenumberofbitsrequiredtoencodeonemessage.Thecodingefficiencyistheratiobetweentheactualnumberofbitsusedtoencodethemessage,andthetotalnumberofbitsused.Entropyisameasureoftheamountofinformationcontainedinasignal.
