schoolschangeslowerthanscholarship.Inthe19thcenturythestudyof

ancienttextswasstillthebackboneofthecurriculum.Whattippedthescales,

atleastintheUS,seemstohavebeentheideathatprofessorsshoulddo

researchaswellasteach.ThisideawasimportedfromGermanyinthelate

19thcentury.BeginningatJohnsHopkinsin1876,thenewmodelspread

rapidly.Writingwasoneofthecasualties.CollegeshadlongtaughtEnglish

painter,and(b)thesubjectofwritingnowtendstobeliterature,sincethafs

whattheprofessorisinterestedin.

renowthreestepsremovedfromrealwork:thestudentsareimitatingEnglish

Theotherbigdifferencebetweenarealessayandthethingstheymakeyou

writeinschoolisthatarealessaydoesn'ttakeapositionandthendefendit.

Thatprinciple,liketheideathatweoughttobewritingaboutliterature,turns

outtobeanotherintellectualhangoveroflongforgottenorigins.

It'softenmistakenlybelievedthatmedievaluniversitiesweremostly

seminaries.Infacttheyweremorelawschools.Andatleastinourtradition

lawyersareadvocates,trainedtotakeeithersideofanargumentandmakeas
