Iwasbright,knowledgeable,eagertolearnnewthingsandwillingtoputin
thetimeneededtodevelopmyself.ButIranintoabrickwall.Itseemedthere
wasaninsidetrack,andIwasdefinitelynotonit.Afteraboutayearanda
half,Irealizedthatmychancesofadvancementwerenil,anditwastimeto
dosomethingaboutit.
Ifloatedtheideaofattendingcollegetomycoworkersandsuperiorsandthe
responsewasmostlynegative.Buttherewereafewpeoplewhothoughtit
wasagoodidea,andIdidaLotofthinking.Isawtwochoices:1.Staywhere
Iwas,miserableinalow-leveljob.2.Takeachanceandgivecollegeatry.
SincemyjobwasLeadingmenowhere,Idecidedtostartcollege.
Overcomingtheinitialobstacles
WhenIstarted;Iencounteredalotofresistancefrompeopleatwork.The
phrase"careerstudent"wasbandiedaboutatme,asifIwaslearningnothing
practicalandbasicallytryingtoavoidgrowingup.Actuallyitwastheother
wayaround,Isawstayinginmyjobasawaytoavoidfacingresponsibilities,
andcollegeasamorerealworld—andanislandofsanityinmylife.
Whileitmadelittledifferencetomeifmycoworkersorbossessupportedmy
decisiontoattendcollege,Ididwantmyfamilybehindme.Thesupportwas
there-Ididn'tneedanyfinancialhelp,butIgotalotofmoralsupportfrommy
parents,aswellasfromfriendsandrelatives.
ProbablythebiggestobstacleIfaced,sinceIwasplaguedbydoubtsaboutmy
ownintelligenceandabilities,wasjustgettingstarted.Idecidedtostartclose
tohomeanddomyfirsttwoyearsofcollegeatPalmBeachCommunity
College,whichwasonthewaytowork,andthentransfertoFloridaAtlantic
University,whichwasmoreoutoftheway.
IhaddrivenpastthecampusofPalmBeachCommunityCollegeseveraltimes.
Inthespringof1987,1finallyworkedupthenervetogointotheadmissions
office.Formanypeoplethatfirststepisabigone,andit*seasytobelievethat
oneissteppingintoanabyss,butPBCCwasflexibleenoughforme.Ihadto
taketheAmericanCollegeTestand,afterscoringwellonthat,wasableto
registerforclasses.MyfirstclasswasintroductiontotheSocialSciences,and
fromthemomenttheprofessorbegantolecture,IknewIhadfoundaplace
whereIcouldlearnandgrow.
CultureShock

experiences.Ifound,instead,thatmostofthecultureshockhappenswhen
youleaveclassandgobacktowork.Forwhileyourcoworkersandbosses
arenotchanging,youare.
Youmayfindyourselfcollidingwiththepeopleatwork.Theymayfindthat
yournewhabits,likestudyingduringbreaksandlunch,andnotgoingtothe
