Lettersofcreditareclassifiedintodifferentcategoriesaccordingtotheirrespectivefunction,formandmechanism.ThenwhatareCleanCreditandDocumentaryCredit?Herecomestheanswer:Situation1Thecreditsthatonlyrequirecleandraft,i.e.draftnotaccompaniedwithshippingdocumentsforpaymentarecleancredits.Theyaregenerallyusedinnon-tradesettlementorinadvancebymeansoftheL/C.Creditsthatrequireshippingdocumentstobepresentedtogetherwiththedraftaredocumentarycredits.Theyarewidelyusedininternationaltrade.Situation2WhatareRevocableCreditandIrrevocableCreditCreditswhichcanbeamended,revokedorcancelledwithoutthebeneficiary’sconsentandevenwithoutpriornoticetothebeneficiaryarecalledrevocablecredits.Itisissuedinfavourofthebeneficiaryinaccordancewiththeinstructionsoftheapplicantandgivesthebuyermaximumflexibility.Andtheexporterorthesellerhaslittleassurancetogetpayment.Situation2Thereforethistypeofcreditsarerarelyused.Creditsthatcannotbeamendedorrevokedwithouttheconsentofallthepartiesconcernedarecalledirrevocablecredits.Theyaresafeandreliable,andusedextensivelyinworldtrade.Ifacreditisnotspecifiedasrevocableorirrevocable,itshouldberegardedasanirrevocablecredit.Situation3HowaboutConfirmedCreditandUnconfirmedCreditThecreditthatisconfirmedbyabankotherthantheissuingbankiscalledaconfirmedcredit.Theconfirmingbankhasaddeditsownundertakingtothatoftheopeningbank.Theconfirmationisundertakeneitherbytheadvisingbankorbyanotherleadingbank.Thecreditthatisnotconfirmedbyanotherbankiscalledunconfirmedcredit.Confirmationmaynotbenecessaryiftheestablishingbankisareliableprimebank,becauseitinvolvesadditionalcost.Situation4ThedifferencebetweenSightCreditandUsanceCreditThecreditbywhichpaymentcanbemadeuponpresentationofthedraftandimpeccabledocumentsbythebeneficiarytothebankiscalledsightcredit.Itgivesthebeneficiarybettersecurityandhelpshimspeeduphiscapitalturnover.Itcallsforasightdraft.Creditbywhichpaymentcannotbemadeuntilaspecifictimeafterthedateoraftersightiscalledusancecredit.Thistypeofcreditrequiresausancedraft.Itisalsocalledastermcreditortimecredit.Situation4Ifthebeneficiarywishestogetpaymentbeforethematurityofthedraft,hecanaskthebanktodiscounttheacceptance,andimmediatelypayhimthenetproceeds,i.e.thefacevalueofthedraftminusthediscountcharges.

Itshouldbenoted,however,thattheexistenceofaletterofcreditisnotaguaranteeofpaymenttoanyone.Situation4Itsexistenceonlyassurespaymenttothebeneficiaryifthetermsandconditionsoftheletterofcreditarefulfilled.Inaddition,aletterofcreditdoesnotinsurethatthematerialspurchasedwillbethoseinvoicedorshipped.Banksissuinglettersofcreditdealindocuments,notinmerchandise.Theyhavenolegalobligationtoinspecttheactualmerchandise.Situation4
