No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling. If spelling becomes the only point of his teachers interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will only write words within his spelling range. Thats why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes .” It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupils technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted(略過) to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the childs deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had concentrated on the childs ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation (呈現(xiàn)) would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.1. Teachers differ in their opinions about .A. the difficulties in teaching spellingB. the role of spelling in general language development C. the importance of the basic writing skills D. the necessity of teaching spelling2. The underlined expression “play safe” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.A. write carefullyB. do as teachers sayC. use dictionaries frequentlyD. avoid using words one is not sure of3. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that .A. students will be able to express their ideas more freely B. teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes C. students will have more trust in writing D. students will learn to spell words correctly 4. The writer seems to think that the teachers judgment on that sensitive piece of writing is .A. reasonableB. unfair C. foolishD. careless5. The major point discussed in the passage is _.A. the importance of developing writing skillsB. the importance of spellingC. the correct way of marking compositionsD. the relationship between spelling and the content of a compositionB The solar system is made up of the sun and all the objects that travel around it. The planets are the largest objects that circle the sun. There are eight planets altogether, some of which are made up of rock and iron. The Earth is a rocky planet. But the largest planets are not Earth-like, one of which is Jupiter. In the solar system no planet is larger than Jupiter. Ancient scientists named the planet after the king of the Roman gods. Jupiter is the fifth closest planet to the sun. It lies after Mars but before Saturn. The closest planet to the sun is Mercury, while Neptune is the farthest one. The Earth is farther from the sun than Mercury but closer than Mars. Like all the planets, Jupiter orbits around the sun.It takes 365 days for the Earth to complete one orbit. But it takes Jupiter almost twelve years to travel around the sun. Jupiter also spins, just as the Earth does. On the Earth one spin takes 24 hours. But Jupiter spins very fast. It only takes ten hours for Jupiter to complete its spin. Jupiters surface cannot be seen from the Earth. Many layers (層) of thick clouds surround the planet. But scientists have ideas about what its surface is like. They think that Jupiter is mostly made up of gas and liquid. Jupiters clouds are very cold. They may be as much as 236 degrees below zero. But under the clouds, the planet is very hot; the temperature can climb to 34,000 degrees. Some scientists say that life forms might be able to exits in Jupiters clouds. But that has not been proved yet. Jupiter has fifteen more moons than the Earth. Some of these moons are made of ice. Others seem to be made of rock. Jupiter also has a thin ring around it; the planet Saturn is famous for rings like these. Several spaceships have flown past Jupiter. They have taken pictures of it and also tested its clouds. That is how scientists have learned more about Jupiter.6. Scientists think Jupiter is probably made up of _. A. rock and iron B. many layers of thick clouds
