An excerpt from Virgils Aeneid Comment:1) Publius Vergilius Marco, or generally known as Virgil is believed by many people as the greatest poem of ancient Rome; and one good reason for that belief is that he composed the book Aeneid, the beautifully constructed and rendered story of ancient Roman people in Latin. Aeneid is the most influential and admired epic to European people, if not most beautiful and important to individual people to certain country. It is generally thought to be second to Homers Iliad and Odyssey, but first one created by a single poet. It was of special importance to Roman people for it told the historical experience, both the pains and glory of Romans. The poem certainly enhanced the national pride of the people who not only made unprecedented military success but also had their bard who was able to sing a beautiful song for them as a race and a nation.2) This excerpt, 58 lines in all, is the very beginning of the poem Aeneid; it is part of the symposium of the whole poem. “Of war is my tale, of the man who, exiled by fate,/Was the first that from Trojan beaches to Italy came;? These first two lines of the poem tell about the beginning and the origin of the hero Aeneas, whose homeland was Troy from which he fled as an exile of war. These two lines set the mood and tone of the beginning of the poem. Later in the poem, though not in this excerpt, we know that Dido, Queen of Carthage, was infatuated with Aeneas and did not want to him to leave. Between love and duty, Aeneas chose to leave and sailed to Latium, for he sensed that he himself was commissioned to rebuild his country in a new land. 3) The language of the epic had its own characteristics, though not brightly and lively as that of Homers, its seriousness, it subtle and mild melancholy, the metaphors, etc. all make the epic a very beautiful one. The poem also had its definite contribution to the versification of Latin poems.1) The excerpt “The Fall of Man” was taken from “Genesis”, the first book of the Old Testament. “Genesis” is one of four books of the Old Testament called Torah, the holy book for the ancient Jewish people. These four books are “Genesis”, “Exodus”, “Leviticus” and “Numbers”. It was told at the very beginning of “Genesis” that God created the Earth and Heaven, created everything including animals, birds and plants in the world. And the first man Adam and the first woman Eve were created by God, too. God was thus attributed to be the creator of all things. “Genesis”, in a way, best represented the religious belief of ancient Jewish people on their outlook, on their beginning of things.2) The excerpt told us how Eve, and Adam, disobeyed the word of the God and, ate the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden, which they were told not to eat or forbidden to eat. The eating of the fruit from that tree marked the fall of man. Before that both Adam and Eve were living in the garden without care and worry and there were plenty of fruits for them to eat and clear spring for them to drink. All year round the garden was
