He had found it, so he told me, when he 7 up some drawers at home. It was a 8 love letter Janet had written. The note could look like a school girls scrawls(潦草地寫,亂涂) about her dream guy. 9 the letter was written by a woman who had had seven children, a woman who fought for her life and who 10 only had a few months left to live.It was 11 a beautiful recipe for how to keep a marriage together. Janets 12 of her husband begins like this, “Loved me. Took care of me. Worried about me.”“Helped me when I was ill.” The next 13 reads. After that she turned 14 the paper and added “Warmth. Humor. I can see her for me when she added thoughtfully “Good friend.”I stand beside John now, and cannot pretend to know how it feels to lose someone who is as close to 18 as Janet was to him. We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man vs the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盤), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a mans very worst qualitiesPeople who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfishAll their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten. It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不嚴(yán)格) and even the strictest are not strict enough. A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rateHere are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a persons driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars. 1 What is the main idea of this passage?A. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.B. Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.C. Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.D. The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.2. What does the author think of society toward motorists?A. Society laughs at the motorists. B. Society forgives their rude driving.C. Victims of accidents are nothing. D. Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.3. What does the author mean by saying “his car becomes the extension of his personality” in Para. 2 ?A. Driving can represent his manners.B. Driving can show the other part of his personality.C. Driving can bring out his character.D. Driving can show his hidden qualities.4. Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?A. Test drivers every three years.B. Stricter driving tests.C. Build more highways.D. Raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.5. The authors attitude towards the present traffic situation is _.A. unsatisfied B. positiveC. appealing D. unclear BMaybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives. It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be content it has grown in yours. Do not rely on ones appearance; it can trick you. Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trails to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Always put yourself in others shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.1. Even though there was a weekend warning, more than 50000 companies at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer experts said on Monday. The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly the next first workday by making computers send off dozens of e-mails containing the virus. Although the virus had no long-lasting damage to a computer, its effects were far-reaching. Michael Vatis, a senior US official said military and government computers were damaged, along with thousands of the other institutions systems. The body of e-mail message says, “here is what you ask for-“once the user opens it, the virus digs into the users address book and sends out messages to the first 50 address. The reason why the virus spreads so rapidly is that youre
