文檔簡介
視聽說4 U1.Jim: You look down in the dumps. What can I do to cheer you up?Wallace: Its not going to work. Im too depressed.Jim: Come on. Tell me whats on your mind.Wallace: Simply too many big problems.Jim: To begin with?Wallace: Im getting bad grades, and Ill have to repeat a lot of courses next semester. I do feel low now. Jim: Look, relax. Ill help you with those courses. Whats your second problem?Wallace: I cant find a company that is willing to accept me as an intern. You see, without field practice, I cant hope to graduate.Jim: Dont worry. Ill help you solve the problem as well. Ill recommend you to the company I worked for during the summer vacation.Wallace: Its kind of you to offer help, but I also hope you can go to the canteen/cafeteria to buy the breakfast for me. Im too tired/exhausted to get out of bed.Jim: Forget it, you lazybones. You are on your own.U2Laura: Hi, Susan.Susan: Eh, sorry, but who are you?Laura: Im Laura. Ive just come back from South Korea.Susan: Oh, what a surprise! If you do not wear the same clothes, I wouldnt recognize you.Laura: Well, I had some cosmetic surgery in South Korea.Susan: Im floored! No wonder you have changed beyond my recognition. What did you undergo?Laura: Quite a lot. To begin with, I had a facelift.Susan: Why? Youve surprised me. You were quite good-looking/charming/elegant without surgery. awesome Laura: You know, I had been worried about the wrinkles around my eyes. My face needed to be tightened up Susan: What else did you have?Laura: I also had liposuction. On dietSusan: My goodness! What for?Laura: To lose weight.Susan: I dont understand getting surgery. Liposuction is not the right way for women to be attractive. You may look gorgeous now, but its against nature.Laura: A better physical appearance will improve my chances of getting a good /decent/well-paid job. If you want to be Competitive in the job market, plastic surgery is indispensible.Susan: Perhaps its enough for us just to use makeup/cosmetics.U3Kate: Well, nowadays there seem to be many natural disasters.Jack: For example, firestorms occur here and there, now and then.Kate: They have destroyed many parts of the globe.Jack: A forest fire generates a lot of heat, and there is no stopping it.Kate: No stopping it? Maybe so, but we should try our best to stop it. We shouldnt let all that good timber burn.Jack: admit you have a point there, but forest fires are part of nature. Thats natures way of cleaning up the debris that collects on the forest floor and creating new kinds of growth.Kate: Theres something in what you said, but how can we watch burning forests with folded arms?Jack: You see, there have been verdant forests for millions of years without mans help fighting the fires.U4For referenceBob: Bob Smith here.Helen: Hi, Bob. Its Helen. Im calling to make an appointment with you.Bob: I hope to get together with you this week, if possible.Helen: Let me check my schedule. Well, Im free as the breeze on Friday.Bob: Good, shall we meet at about 10 in the morning at your office?Helen: No problem. III look forward to seeing you at IO a.m. on Friday.(Later)Helen: Hello, Bob. Im sorry to say something unexpected has come up. Im afraid I have to cancel the meeting with you on Friday.Bob: Im sorry to hear that. Shall we meet some other time?Helen: Shall we postpone the meeting until Monday afternoon? Will that suit you?Bob: Its a pity that I have a full schedule on Monday. I wont be free until after 5 p.m.Helen: Its fine with me. Lets make it 5:30 p.m. then.U5For referenceJane: Mr. Johnson, Im sorry, but I have to tell you Im leaving.Mr. Johnson: Why, Jane? When are you leaving?Jane: I have to end my work here in three weeks. You see, Ive got a position with a multinational corporation.Mr. Johnson: I regret that youll be leaving us. I do appreciate your work here. You have run this place with clockwork efficiency.Jane: Thank you for your kind words. Anyway, I hope this three-week notice will give you time to hire and train a replacement.Mr. Johnson: But assistants like you are one in a million. Im not sure the replacement will be equally efficient.Jane: Ill put out notices today and screen the applicants myself. I want to make sure that the newcomer is efficient.Mr. Johnson: Thank you very much, but things certainly wont be the same without you around here.Jane: If you have any problems in future, please feel free to call me.Mr. Johnson: Thanks a million. Were going to miss you a lot.U6For referenceTIM: Its interesting to note that so many people are superstitious nowadays.Ginger: Yeah. Many psychologists are researching the relationship between superstition and luck.Tim: There might be some relationship between the two. Anyway, what did they find? Id be interested to know their findings.Ginger: The main finding is that people who believe themselves to be lucky tend to believe in positive superstitions. Tim: That seems to be true to me. You know, many lucky people wear a ring as a talisman.Ginger: And they often say “touch wood” for good luck.Tim: What about the unlucky people?Ginger: Unlucky people tend to believe in superstitions about bad luck.Tim: Thats true. They worry a lot about a broken mirror.Ginger: Also, they are anxious if a black cat runs across their path.Tim: What conclusion can we draw from the psychologists studies?Ginger: People make their own luck by their attitude to life. Our fate is linked to our attitude rather than to our superstitions.Tim: I agree. Our fate is connected to our attitude, not our superstitions.U7For referenceDavid: Would you like to play a game of tennis?Emma: Thank you for asking, but its so hot.David: What about table tennis indoors?Emma: Sorry, Im not in the mood.David: Lets go surfing. Its fun.Emma: I just dont feel like it. Its such an effort.David: Maybe something sedentary like watching a football game?Emma: Not interested. Im not athletic.David: What about going to the cinema to see a blockbuster?Emma: I dont care much for a movie.David: Shall we go to a concert, then?Emma: A concert? Let me think. Well, what I want to do is to stay at home.David: Lets try the TV and find a good program.Emma: I dont like TV programs. I want to play computer games.U8Sam: The cloning technology is developing fast, and I think well soon be able to clone humans.Zoe: Oh. I have some reservations about it. Therere still many- scientific problems to solve before human cloning starts.Sam: Human cloning will be extremely useful. Many couples want to pay a lot of money, maybe alltheir money, to clone their dead children.Zoe: But no one knows if the cloning will succeed or not. How risky it is!Sam: Why is it risky?Zoe: Its still unknown if cloned animals can live long. They may age unnaturally fast.Sam: But some couples cant give birth to a child, so a cloned child is better than no child at all.Zoe: We are not sure. A cloned animal may grow abnormally large.Sam: The larger, the better. Maybe some parents want a cloned child who will grow to be as tall asYao Ming.Zoe: Theres another risk. Perhaps cloning will damage the mind.Sam: You see what you mean. Those parents may not be happy with their cloned children. So, perhapsWe should forbid human cloning by law.Zoe: In my opinion, the cloning of human organs shouldnt t t be prohibited. It may help solve medical problems.Sam: I see your point: Cloning should be regulated if its to benefit humanity.U9Mary: What are you reading, Jack?Jack: Well, an article about the export volume of the largest foreign trade company in our city.Mary: What was the volume last year?Jack: It hit an all-time high. The total export volume amounted t0 20 million US dollars, up 15 percent from the previous year.Mary: That was good. But how did they manage to achieve such good results?Jack: Many factors contributed to the companys success. To begin with, booming consumption in foreign countries created opportunities for Chinese exports.Mary: Why do people in those countries rush to buy things?Jack: Obviously they were looking for status symbols.Mary: They must be quite rich.Jack: Its hard to say. Most people just bought on credit.Mary: Are there any other favorable factors for that foreign trade company.Jack: An exporter can get rebates from the Chinese customs department.Mary: I see. But is the foreign trade company so lucky this year?Jack: Not at all. Its exports dropped 15 million dollars, a steep fall of 25 percent compared with the corresponding period last year.Mary: Wow, thats terrible. Why the sharp fall?Jack: Once again, more than one factor plays a role. The high debt in some foreign countries has burst the bubble.Mary: So what?Jack: As a result, consumption has been low, and they no longer buy.Mary: Oh, I understand. What are the other reasons?Jack: Owing to the financial crisis, some foreign countries depend on trade protectionism. They increased tariffs. Mary: That must be a heavy blow to our exports.Jack: Last but not the least, that foreign trade company has only a blunt competitive edge and cant deal with the difficult situation.Mary: Seems the most important thing is to sharpen our own competitive edge.Jack: How true!U10.Bill: Hey, Jack! I hear you l:Lecame a millionaire by investing in the stock market. But I always lose money in the market. Can you give me some suggestions?Jack: Well, youd better observe the market closely.Bill: I do. I read the stock list
