The Delight of Books Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages; they picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves. Many of those who have had, as we say, all that this world can give, have yet told us they owed much of their purest happiness to books. Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he tells us in his biography that he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. He says: “If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king; I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.” Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the noblest spirits, through the most sublime and enchanting regions. Without stirring from our firesides we may roam to the most remote regions of the earth, or soar into realms where Spensers shapes of unearthly beauty flock to meet us, where Miltons angels peal in our ears the choral hymns of Paradise. Science, art, literature, philosophy,-all that man has though, all that man has done,-the experience that has been bought with the sufferings of a hundred generations,-all are garnered up for us in the world of books.Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages; they picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with food and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves. Many of those who have had, as we say, all that this world can give, have yet told us they owed much of their purest happiness to books. Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he tells us in his biography that he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. He says, If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king; I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading. Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk in imagination with the noblest spirits through the most sublime and enchanting regions. Without stirring from our firesides we may roam to the most remote regions of the earth, or soar into realms where Spensers shapes of unearthly beauty flock to meet us, where Miltons angels peal in our ears the choral hymns of Paradise. Science, art, literature, philosophy, -all that man has thought, all that man has done, -the experience that has been bought with the sufferings of a hundred generations, -all are garnered up for us in the world of books. Advertising translationWarm-up: English Classical AdsStart Ahead. Autumn, wherever it is, always has something to recommend itself. In North China, however, it is particularly limpid, serene and melancholy. To enjoy its atmosphere to the full in the onetime capital, I have, therefore, made light of travelling a long distance from Hanghou to Qingdao, and thence to Peiping. There is of course autumn in the South too, but over there plants wither slowly, the air is moist, the sky pallid, and it is more often rainy than windy. While muddling along all by myself among the urban dwellers of Suzhou, Shanghai, Xianmen, Hong Kong or Guangzhou, I feel nothing but a little chill in the air, without ever relishing to my hearts content the flavour, colour, mood and style of the season. Unlike famous flowers which are most attractive when half opening, good wine which is most tempting when one is half drunk, autumn, however, is best appreciated in its entirety. It is more than a decade since I last saw autumn in North. When I am in the South, the arrival of each autumn will put me in mind of Peipings Tao Ran Ting with its reed catkins, Diao Yu Tai with its shady willow trees, Western Hills with their chirping insects, Yu Quan Shan Mountain on a moonlight evening and Tan Zhe Si with its reverbrating bell. Suppose you put up in a humble rented house inside the bustling imperial city, you can, on getting up at dawn, sit in your courtyard sipping a cup of strong tea, leisurely watch the high azure skies and listen to pigeons circling overhead. Saunter eastward under locust trees to closely observe streaks of sunlight filtering through their foliage, or quietly watch the trumpet-shaped blue flowers of morning glories climbing half way up a dilapidated wall, and an intense feeling of autumn will of itself well up inside you. As to morning glories, I like their blue or white flowers best, dark purple ones second best, and pink ones third best. It will be most desirable to have them set off by some tall thin grass planted underneath here and there. The Reading of a Painting Poetry and painting belong to two types, which are different in all aspects, such as objects, tools and methods. However, the confusion of types has existed since ancient times. It is called “Ut pictura poesis” in the west. And “poetry likes this, so does painting” has been a famous saying in the period of art criticism. In china, we also speak highly of Wang Mojies “poetry within painting and painting within poetry”. Poetry and painting are two types which are different from each other on the object, instrument, method and other aspects. However, confusion of the two types has already occurred in the old. In the west, what they call ut pictura poesis, “Since poetry likes that, so is painting”, have already become a well-known saying of art criticism. Also we Chinese think highly of Wang Mojies “there is the poetry in the painting, and painting in the poetry”. Poetry and painting fall under two different categories, different in every aspect including aesthetic interest, medium and technique. But confusions over the two genres have a long history. in the West, there is a saying Ut picture poesis, “As in painting, so in poetry”, which has long been regarded as an established observation in art criticism. In China, we too have a particular liking for Wang Weis “having poetry in his painting and painting in his poetry” . However, poetry and painting are different categories after all. When we read a poem, we are able to appreciate the description of scenery, so called “vivid as a painting”. But the beauty of poetry lies in other points, which focus on human notions and emotions. The so-called poetic meaning, poetic interest and poetic environment, that are more or less abstract, are expressed most appropriately by words. Then ultimately poetry and painting have their own aspects. When reading a poem, we can enjoy the description of the scene which is so-called “everything is like a painting”. But the trait of the poetry which emphasizes on the notions and feelings of people is actually unique. Although abstraction exists more or less, the meaning, pleasure and context of poetry are expressed properly by lingual characters. Having said that, however, we should draw a line between poetry and painting. In reading a poem, we may appreciate its description of scenery to a degree of “pictorial vividness”. Yet the essence of poetry lies somewhere else. That is, it has its ultimate aesthetic interest in human conceptions and emotions. What is called “poetic meaning”, “poetic taste”, or “poetic world”, abstract and elusive as these terms may sound, can after all be best captured in words. 1 Good to the last drop滴滴香濃,意猶未盡。(麥斯威爾咖啡) 2 Obey your thirst
