1、Descriptive writing, sometimes called “showing writing”, is writing that describes a particular person, place or event in great detail. u Descriptive writing uses a lot of flowery adjectives and adverbs to describe what is going on or how something appears. uDescriptive essays are often subjective t

2、asks. The descriptive essay is often creative, personal, or simply artistic. If you were going to describe biting into an apple, you would not simply say: He bit into the apple and it tasted good. Descriptive writing would convey the same sentence as follows: The crunch of his teeth piercing the app

3、les skin was deafening and the sweet juices of the apple ran down his chin. He slowly closed his teeth on the ripe, succulent, ruby-colored apple. The taste of the meat was as sweet as candy and he felt euphoric. Smell Adjectives include: 芳香的:aromatic,sweet- scented,fragrant 臭的,惡臭的:smelly, reeking,f

4、etid, malodorous putrid(腐爛的) Taste Adjectives include: pungent(辛辣的辛辣的), sour, acrid (辛辣的辛辣的), bitter, fetid, stinking, putrid(腐爛的)(腐爛的), decaying, rancid(陳腐的)(陳腐的), reek, stale (不新鮮,走味的(不新鮮,走味的),bad. Example One: Salt Looks like: white, small, shiny. Feels like: grainy, soft, slips through my finger

5、s. Tastes like: bitter, salty, bad. Sounds like: quiet, rustle, silent. Smells like: faint, odorless, mildly bitter. Example Two The scar on his chin only shows up in a certain light. (sight) He wears too much aftershave(須后水須后水). (smell) The kiwi fruit tastes acid. (taste) He has a high-pitched laug

6、h. (sound) His hair feels wiry(金屬絲的金屬絲的). (touch) Heres an example of how all five of our senses can be used to describe a simple scene: The apple was bright green, its skin polished and shining as it nestled in the fruit bowl (sight). The scent was fresh, as though the fruit had just been plucked f

7、rom the tree (smell). She took it from the bowl, her fingers closing around the firm smooth skin (touch) as she lifted it to her lips. The apple crunched loudly (sound) as her teeth cut through the skin into the tart, juicy flesh (taste). As the fresh juice ran down her throat she noticed a small bl

8、ack speck moving slowly in the creamy flesh. Closer inspection revealed that she hadnt just taken a bite from the apple - shed bitten through a fat, juicy worm. Para. 8 Pay attention to the use of TOUCH in descriptive writing I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the

9、 smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winters sleep. I feel the delightful texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable folds; and something of the miracle of

10、 Nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a brook rush through my open fingers. To me a thick carpet of pine needles or soft grass is more welcome tha
