1、Ending Your Essay CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH WRITING A CONCLUSION Just as every essay has a clear beginning, it should have a clear ending. The last paragraph, also know as the conclusion, should make your essay sound finished. The concluding paragraph typically has two parts: 1. The summary statement one

2、 or two sentences which restate the thesis in a fresh way to reinforce the essays main idea. 2. The clincher a final thought which should create a lasting impression on the reader. WRITING A CONCLUSION THE SUMMARY STATEMENT The summary statement is an effective way to start your concluding paragraph

3、 because it helps to drive home the ideas youve expressed in your essay. Look at your thesis statement again and rework it in a new way. Avoid repeating key words and phrases from the thesis statement because you dont want the summary statement to sound boring or repetitive. Using a thesaurus is a g

4、ood way to find new, interesting words. EXAMPLE OF SUMMARY STATEMENT Thesis: I strongly believe that going to high school should not be mandatory because not only will it be taking away freedom of choice, but also cause a decline in education standards and impose financial strain on the lower class

5、Summary Statement: If we do not want our youth to have a second rate education or limit their freedom and creativity we should let teenagers make their own decisions about continuing their education. EXAMPLE OF SUMMARY STATEMENT Thesis statement I think cigarette smoke should be banned in public are

6、as because not only is unhealthy for the smoker but it also poses risks for non-smokers and causes an unpleasant social environment. Summary Statement In order for everyone to have a healthier lifestyle and to fully enjoy an evening spent in a restaurant or caf, smoking should not be allowed in publ

EXAMPLE OF A SUMMARY STATEMENT Thesis Beauty contests like Miss Universe or Miss China have a negative effect on young girls because not only does it skew their self-image but also cause emotional damage and hinders their social development. WRITING A CONCLUSION THE CLINCHER The clincher, also referred to as the closer, is your last opportunity to connect with the reader. One way to make the most of this m

9、oment is to return to the technique you used for your grabber. Finish the anecdote Make a prediction based on the fact or statistic Ask a final rhetorical question Use a new quotation or refer back to the old quotation in the opening paragraph. Or finish a quotation. Continue the original descriptio

His son couldnt handle the pressure and finally dropped out right after not answering a single question in his English Gaokao exam. Lao Wang had to sell hi

11、s little shop and go back to being a construction worker when he couldnt pay back the bank. It is reading cases like this that make me strongly believe that going to high school should not be mandatory because not only will it be taking away freedom of choice, but also cause a decline in education s

According to the AC Nelson company who does surveys, each week the small screen holds the attention of children under 5 for an average of 23.5 hours and adults for an average of 44 hours. Indeed the average person spends more time in front of th

15、e television than he or she spends doing any other activity other than sleep. But far from being the “idiot box” it is commonly called, television also offers many benefits. Television is not only a good form of entertainment and relaxation, but also can be educational and contribute to a persons me

16、ntal well- being. Conclusion People need television to unwind and rest their mind after a busy day. More importantly, if we use it properly, television can also academically stimulate our minds. Its unlikely that the figures from the AC Nelson company are going to go down, despite the growing popula

17、rity of computers and online TV, the television set will still hold a central position in peoples living rooms in the future. WRITING A CONCLUSION Ask a final rhetorical question Sometimes dont you just wish you could go crazy? You feel like everything you do is controlled by others, and you just wa

18、nt to break free. Xiao Wang felt that way too. He ended up being pulled up from the bottom of a lake after jumping in to impress his friends. Sometimes too much control can have serious consequences. Curfews have a negative effect on teenagers because it not only limits their freedom but also causes

Conclusion: Making young people adhere to strict bedtimes and curfews will cause society to produce caged teenagers who are unable to behave and socialize properly. So would the country go to the dogs without curfews, would students go crazy a

20、nd crash out of school in record numbers?! Hardly! WRITING A CONCLUSION Use a new quotation or refer back to the old one. “Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living” said Miriam Beard. I think I understand what she me

21、ans. Travel broadens the mind in a way school never can. So I think a Gap year is beneficial because not only does it a break from the pressures of school but also give students a chance to explore options and allows them to make better choices about their future. Conclusion If we want university st

22、udents to reach their full potential and enjoy their entire life to the fullest, a gap year is necessary. Give them a chance to breathe! Then this “deep and permanentchange” will affect you and those around you in the most positive way! WRITING A CONCLUSION Continuing the description A skinny dark m

To avoid such tragedies in the future, its necessary for the government to be responsible for regulating the quality of food because not only will it raise the overall quality of food production but it will also have health benefits and prevent deaths. None of the shocked mourning relatives were allowed view the skeletal, twisted black body with its eternal grimace of agony. Which is why I believe that the government should be held responsible

26、 for regulating our food. Everyone has the right to eat delicious food at a reasonable price without risking their well being or even their life! CONCLUDING PARAGRAPHS Strategies to avoid Beginning with an unnecessary, overused phrase such as in conclusion, in summary, or in closing. Although these

27、phrases can work in speeches, they come across as wooden and trite in writing. Stating the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion. Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion. Ending with a rephrased thesis statement without any changes. Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest
