Social discourse rarely consist of just single clauses, rather social contexts develop as sequences of meanings comprising texts. Since each text is produced interactively between spe

8、akers, and between writers and (potential) readers, we can use it to interpret the interaction it manifests. (Martin & Rose 2007:1 Working with Discourse ) 2 Why do we use language or what are functions of language from social aspect? metafunctions of language in social activity: three general socia

9、l functions that we use language for: (i) to enact our (paticipants) social relationships; (ii) to represent (表征) our experience to each other; and (iii) to organize our enactments and representations as meaningful text(組句成篇). 3 What can discourse analysis do or how does discourse analysis do ? Disc

YOU 2nd person plural should be taken as readers ) 6 We as discourse analysts can give many roles I and YOU in

15、the text can play . I (first person singular ) can be taken as a woman author/ writer, columnist, journalist; therefore the essay is her realization of a mother is. (EXPERIENCER) as a real mother/ /as a would-be mother (at moment she wrote this essay ,she was not a mother, some day she will be mothe

16、r) (AGENT) as a mother in imagination if she were a mother, she would tell her children how much a mother in the real world loves her child/children and how great a mother is .YOU as singular one of the authors children (present or absent) I loved you enough YOU as singular You dont love me! l is th

17、e childs father or mother YOU as plural real children of the author YOU as plural readers in general or readers who have been parents (How many times have your kids laid that one on you? 2 And how many times have you, as a parent, resisted the urge to tell them how much? 3In a word, YOU against the

18、text can be taken either as singular or plural. 7 I in the text has many voices to makeas mother/ author.8 The past tense I loved you enough indicates subjunctive mood (黃國文)。And I d rather take past tense in the text as a summary of the wisdom which was accumulated and passed from generation to gene

19、ration because wisdom and experience was past-oriented. Love from parents was given to their children before they grew up/before they were not old enough to understand it. 9 The producer of this discourse takes great care to make a choice of person (I or You) as subject in all 20 sentences .This can

20、 be interpreted as Unmarked Theme (the most common choice for the Theme of a clause is the Subject.(Martin & Rose 2007:178 ).Choices for unmarked Theme tend to fix our gaze, to maintain continuity of text and to help identifying the participants (聚焦我們的視線,維系語篇的連續(xù)性,識別參與者資源)。The Theme gives us an orien

21、tation to what is to come ;what I is going to do to his/her children LOVE. (Martin & Rose 2007:181 )10 Whats the theme of text or what does the author intend to tell us? Whats the conversational implicature?11 How is coherence established? Coherence in this text is established by parallelism and ellipsis(the red parts).12 Topicality in the text is maternity to children which is enacted and represented in the same and varied ways .By the same way love as a topic is duplicated 16 times (love is represented in similar syntacti
