10、om.So he put the bits of toys back into his pockets and gave up the idea._At this dark and hopeless mome nt,a won derful idea came to him.It filled his mind with a great,brightlight.Calmly he picked up the brush and started aga in to whitewash.While Tom was working,Ben Rogers appeared.Ben was eating
11、 an apple as he walked along thestreet.As he walked alon g,he was making no ises like the sound of a riverboat.First he shouted loudly,likea boat capta in. The n he said“ Ding -DongDong ,“Ding -Dong- Dong again and again,like the bell of a riverboat.And he made other stra nge noises.Whe n he came cl
12、ose to Tom,he stopped.Tom went on whitewash in g.He did not look at Ben .Be n stared for a mome nt and the n said,“ Hello!I m going swim min g,but you can t go,ca n you? ”No an swer.Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of anartist.Ben came nearer.Tom s
13、mouth watered for the apple,but hekept on work ing.Ben said, “Hello,old fellow,you ve got to work,hey? ”Tom turned sudde nly and said, “ Why,it s you,Be n!l was n t no tic ing.”“ Say I m going swim min g.D on t you wish you could?But of course you d rather work wouldn t you? Of course you would. ”To
14、m looked at the boy a bit,a nd said,“ Why do you call work? ”“Why,is ntthat work?”Tom went back to his whitewash in g,a nd an swered carelessly.“Well,maybe it is,and maybe it isn t.All I know is,it suits Tom Sawyer.”“Oh come,now,you don t mean to say that you like it?” The brush continued tomove.Lik
