IntroductionInternet, defined as an international computer network connecting other networks and computers from companies, universities, etc is originated since 1960s and with the development of techno
5、logy it becomes more and more important in our life and is widely used in many fields such as military, teaching, research and so on.Since it boomed in 1990s, it has become an influential tool in our life. We can gain numerous resources from searching the Internet and we can use the Internet to comm
6、unicate each other timely. For internet has such characteristics it has become a useful auxiliary teaching tool. Moreover, the New Curriculum Reform requires our teachers to guide students learning instead of just directly teaching them knowledge. By using the Internet, we can enrich our teaching co
7、ntent and make students be interested in our teaching content by combining images with lectures, videos with pictures and voices with the silent text. We can also use internet to evaluate the teaching effect by asking students questions via communicating tools such as QQ, MSN or letting students sen
8、d their home work via E-mail. For students, internet is also useful. When they meet problems in the text, they can use BBS and other internet service to ask teachers or other learned people for help. In all, internet is useful in middle school English language teaching for both students and teachers
9、. This essay aims to find out how internet is used in English teaching and the effect of internet in middle school English language teaching. It focuses most on how to use internet to motivate students willingness to learn English ,how to correctly use the network in English teaching, and how to gui
10、de students in class under the guideline of the New Curriculum Standard.The use of internet in pre-teachingA. The importance of lesson planning and principles to followBefore teaching a lesson, teachers should write teaching plans. Although preparation does not guarantee successful lessons, walking
11、into a classroom unprepared is more often than not the beginning of a disastrous lesson. Besides, students can immediately notice if their teachers are prepared or not. Unprepared teachers receive much less trust and cooperation from the students. As lesson planning is important in teaching, a metic
12、ulously prepared lesson can reach great teaching effect. After students attending a well prepared lesson, only do the students know what the text is about, the vocabulary and grammar knowledge but also their interest of learning English is motivated.What lesson planning performs in pre-teaching is l
13、esson plan. A lesson plan is a framework of a lesson in which teachers make advanced decision about what they hope to achieve. In other words, teachers need to think about the aims to be achieved, materials to be covered, activities to be organized, and techniques and resources to be used in order t
14、o achieve the aims of the lesson(Wang Qiang 2006:51).Lesson planning consists of three parts: plan for the text, plan for the students, and plan for teaching method. When we want to do a good lesson plan we should consider such principles: aim, variety, flexibility, learnability and linkage. Aim mea
15、ns that the teacher should set up a clear idea of what he/she would like to achieve for the lesson or what outcome would be expected from the lesson. With clear aims in mind, we can reach a good lesson planning. Variety means planning a number of different types of activities where possible and intr
16、oducing students to a wide selection of materials so that learning is always interesting, motivating and never monotonous for the students. Flexibility means preparing some extra and alternative tasks and activities as the class does not always go according to the plan so that teachers always have t
17、he options to cope with the unexpected situations rather than being the slaves of written plans or one methodology. Learnability means the contents and tasks planned for the lesson should be within the learning capability of the students. Doing things that are below or beyond the students coping abi
18、lity will diminish their motivation. Linkage means the stages and the steps within each stage are planned in such a way that they are in someway linked with one another. For example, teaching normally would start with an easy task followed by a comparatively difficult one; or before conducting commu
19、nicative tasks, the teacher organizes students to do a series of language-focused activities to get them prepared linguistically. Good linkage makes the lesson transit from one stage to the next smoothly and students experience less anxiety.B. The use of internet in facilitating lesson planningTradi
20、tionally, although English teaching need a variety of teaching material, English teachers sometimes only gain them from books, pictures, tapes and videos. Some teachers can only use the teachers reference book to prepare the text, which makes the lesson boring and can not motivate students interest.
21、 Sometimes when the teacher meets a rarely used language points in the process of lesson planning, the only thing he/she can do is to search the books, ask colleagues for help and have collective discussion. Most of the time the result he/she gains is inauthoritative, indirect and general. With the
22、enlargement of the network sharing resources, we can gain the most authoritative, direct and detailed material just by searching on the Internet. With the proper use of search engine such as Baidu, Google, Yahoo and so on, we can gain any material we want immediately and correctly. With the use of t
23、he resources we gain on the internet, we can make our lesson plan more interesting and motivate students interest. For example, when we teach a text concerning festivals, we can first input the key word “festival” in Baidu and gain pictures and articles about traditional and western festivals. By us
24、ing these materials the teacher can use them to make PPT to motivate students interests and even can send the links to students for them to preview the text. From then on, students can know the difference of tradition and culture between eastern and western countries and gain enough material to writ
25、e an essay about the topic of festival. With the using of immediate communication tools such as E-mail, QQ, MSN and so on, the teacher could put forward tasks for students to do before teaching a lesson. Students also can use internet to gain background information to preview a lesson. In this way,
26、the initiative of students is improved and students can understand more.Not only can internet be used to search for a variety of teaching material, it can also be used to help the teacher to understand the text deeply and correctly. Lesson planning first asks us to plan for the text according to the
27、 teaching standard and the text. We need to deeply understand the teaching standard and the relationship between the standard and the text. When we meet the knowledge point which is hard to understand or rarely used, we can use BBS, Baidu Questions and Answers, or other ways to solve the problem. By
28、 using the communicating platform which is built by the internet, teachers can gain more information and can understand more about the text.We can also use internet to help us to decide our teaching aim. In the past, teachers mostly use the teaching reference book or their own understanding of the t
29、ext to decide what the important part of the text is and consider the students understanding of the text to decide what the difficult part of the text is. However, by using the internet we can make our teaching aim comprehensive. We can use the internet to search for the background information of th
30、e text and discuss with other people through the internet especially through the BBS, QQ or other immediate communicating tools. We can also use the internet to search for what other teachers have planned for the text and choose the right teaching aims to make the teaching plan.C. Potential problems
31、 of using the internet to do lesson planningHowever, when we use the internet to do the teaching plan, we should pay attention to the following aspect: first, teachers should have their own understanding of the text and design the process of the teaching according to their own understanding. Having
32、ones own understanding is important, for different people have different understandings of the same thing. There is various view of the text on the internet. Second, teachers should focus on selecting appropriate material. There is vast information on the internet, however choosing the appropriate o
33、ne is important. Teachers should choose the appropriate one according to their teaching process. If they choose the inappropriate one, they can not reach the best teaching effect. In fact choosing the appropriate material is a way to deeply understanding the text. By doing this, the teacher can deep
34、ly understand the text and choose the best teaching plan. Third, teachers should lay emphasis on the characteristics of their teaching plan. When we use the internet to choose the teaching plan, we should focus on learning the advanced idea of other people, learning the advanced teaching method and
35、the advantage of other aspects. In all, when we use internet in pre-teaching, we should focus on how to fully use the internet and how to select the material on the internet.The use of internet in while- teachingThe new curriculum standard asks us to lead students to study by themselves. We should m
36、ake full use of different kinds of teaching methods to meet this standard. Then how to lead students to study by themselves? We think internet can be a useful tool.Language teaching, especially English language teaching has its own features. It not only consists of teaching grammar, vocabulary, sent
37、ence or the traditionally called listening ability, reading ability, writing ability, speaking ability and translating ability but also consists of using English in daily life. However traditional English teaching mostly focuses on teaching the grammar points, rather than the practicing of English e
38、specially the communicative ability. To break this fact and to reach the new curriculum standard, teachers should carefully design the teaching plan and fully motivate the students interests. Internet, for it has many advantages, can be the most useful tool for English teaching and in teaching, the
39、use of internet is mostly performed as the use of multimedia.Here are the advantages of using the internet. First, internet builds a window for communicating with the outside world timely and effectively. Communication is a main feature of human beings. After the appearing of the internet, the metho
40、d of communication and the ability to communicate has been changed greatly. Nowadays, English teachers can use the internet to communicate with the foreign peers to know the newest information of the English teaching method. Via participating in the interest group on the internet or discussing quest
41、ions in BBS, English teachers can gain good teaching method and develop their professional knowledge. With the development of the knowledge, we should keep on learning to keep pace with the time. Second, there are numerous materials on the internet, which can make our teaching more convenient. Inter
42、net can be seen as a sea of information. Via using the internet, especially the digital library and many meaningful websites, teachers can gain many meaningful lectures, pictures, videos and so on. English teachers can gain enough teaching material and solve the problems which they meet in preparing
43、 the text. So internet can greatly help with the preparing of the text. Third, internet can motivate the study interest of the students. When we gain enough material, we can use it to lead students to study by themselves and use the multimedia to motivate students study interest. As we know, the tea
44、ching tools in the traditional classroom are only chalk, blackboard, audiotapes and some better ones have TV sets. But the multimedia teaching synthesizes the sounds, pictures, texts, and cartoons into a whole unit. It will depend on the needs to transform some abstract boring texts into the visible
45、, audible and interesting content. It cannot only stimulate the interests in students English learning, but also can provide a real language-learning environment for students. It will make students understand some abstract texts easily. By doing this, it makes students gain information more quickly
46、and effectively. For it can make the content of courses more substantial. And students will take a more active role in learning. Take the lesson “Olympic Games” for example, as the teacher teaches in a traditional way: The time for one lesson is limited, so the teacher can only tell a little extracu
47、rricular knowledge about Olympics, and then he teaches the grammar or structure in this text. But compared with this way, if the teacher uses the multimedia tools, the lesson will become more attractive. The teacher can add more extracurricular knowledge about Olympics, because the teacher neednt sp
48、end a lot of time on word and phrase teaching, background information introduction, and there is also no need to write so much on the blackboard. It will save much time for the teacher to do more important things in class: to design some activities, to see whether students have really grasped the kn
49、owledge they should learn, to explain difficult parts, to practice spoken English by giving them some topics to discuss or by doing other things such as role-playing. In this way, students can really grasp and use the language, to realize the final goal of language learning-to use it freely. Moreove
50、r internet not only can motivate the study interest of students, it also provides a tool for teaching students in different levels and broadens students view. Internet makes it easy to teach students according to their ability and can also repeat the content that has been taught. It is easy for stud
51、ents to surmount the difficulty in English learning too. Multimedia will improve learning by allowing the teacher to use the most effective medium to present specific information or instructions and communicate with the entire class easily with the use of the instant message tools. Students can also
52、 be motivated under this kind of atmosphere to give feedbacks, reactions or even their answers to the teacher's questions immediately through computers. This becomes an important link and motivation between teachers and students. In addition, teachers can create graphically enhanced information
53、and instructions for the learning centers and create tutorials, reviews, or quizzes for individual students. Students also can use the websites which focus on helping English learners to improve their abilities of listening, reading, writing, speaking, and translating. They can also use the instant
54、message tools such as QQ, MSN to talk with the foreign students to practice their oral English and can use the resources of the internet to know the culture background of the English countries.A. The use of internet in the teaching of listeningListening is an important ability in English learning. W
55、ith the development of technology, and the increase of trades and exchanges between countries, it is more and more important to understand spoken English in many situations such as face-to-face, on the telephone, in business meetings, lectures, speeches, on television, and so on. However, listening
56、is also the difficult point of the English learners. Traditionally, listening teaching is just the teacher playing the tape or mp3 and students doing the tasks and then checking the answers. This module of listening teaching is inefficient and boring. Not only is the content of the tasks out of date
57、 but also the module made both the teacher and students feel tired and bored. However, by using the internet this problem would be solved. Now Id like to talk about how to use internet to teach listening skills. First, use internet to do the practice of listening skills. Before the practice, the tea
58、cher should choose a variety of listening materials concerning society, science, geography and so on and then use the internet to search for the background information of the tasks and then send e-mails to students to tell them the background information of the following listening tasks and ask them
59、 to keep a mind on the background information. While doing the task, the teacher should combine extensive listening with intensive listening and guide students to focus on the background information, the expressions used in the conversation, the detail of the conversation and how to use the background information such as the plot, the option and background knowledge of th
