1、UNIT 1I am frequently asked the question ”Can you use chopsticks” I havelived in Korea ,Japan and China .In each country , I have more oftenthan not and without having requested one ,been given a fork when onewas available .I have politely refused and said that I would be fine withchopsticks .Someti
2、me, I have to makefurther explanation.Chopsticks are the least of my worries when I am eating in an Asianhome or restaurant .In fact ,learning how to use chopsticks takes menothing but a few weeks .This is not to say I was skillful,though .Learning how to use chopsticks is easy for me , whereas lear
3、ningthe rituals and how to conduct myself at the table is quite difficult . Justhow many times do I have to say ”no ,thank you” when I really mean”no ,thank you ,I truly am full ?How do I get away with refusing morefood without offending someone ?If I insist and I still get more ,is itappropriate ju
4、st not to eat it ?This would beimpolitewhere I come from.I have enjoyed many great meals and my interactions with the peoplehave been great .I am increasingly aware that I will never be able to giveback as much as I have received. I don t know how I can ever thank allof the people who introduced me
5、to eating in Asia.UNIT 2This was what all of the training and pain was about-winning .I watchedTV to see the young runner who had been under my coaching for the last1few years .I would have been there on the spot had it not been for thetraffic problem .I couldnt make it even on my bicycle. While I w
6、atchedthe young runner enter to the cheers of thousands of people ,I could nothelp thinkingof the pains that he had gone through in his training.The young runner was hardly considered to be promisingwhen he firstcame to me .There were countless training sessions full of pain for him .Ihad seen fatig
7、ue written on his face I had heard him swear at me .I hadbeen indifferentto his anger and pain .It was clear that only hard workcould earn him success .I had smiled to myself when I found that he hadtoo much passion to give up .And he would persistwith the training untilhe reached perfection .I had
8、never forgot to remind him that despite thechallenges he had to keep on practice. It was unfair that he had no timefor his G F. But that was life for him.The thunderous shouts and cheers drew me back to the TV screen .Oh,my dear ,the young runner was gaining speed .He was running to thefinish line .
9、He was strong enough to beat other runners .Hiscourage ,heart and discipline together with his years of practice won himthe honor. Tears rolled down my cheeks when I found on the screen theyoung runner was looking around .I understood at once that he waslooking for me .For year ,he had become so use
10、d to my presence ,successor failure .It must have seemed strange for him to find me missing.2UNIT 3I didnt marry for all the ” right reasons”.Love had nothing to do withmarriage .And ,for my husbands part, well, I suspect love was on hismind either .He married me because I made him feel young .He wa
11、s suchan ordinary man going around his very ordinary midlife crisis .He wasdivorced ,looking for younger women and a career change .That didntbother me, though .He was still fairly charming ,pretty handsome andabove all rich .I married for money ,and I dont have any doubt aboutit .My friends dont ap
12、plaud my decision ,but I can also tell that they wish,at least a little bit ,for some of the same things that I now enjoy .Theyalways prefer to speed a lot of time by my swimming pool than at theircommon little homes .And another thing, they are always complainingabout their beloved”. ”Hes always wa
13、tching how much I spend. ” Itsbecome more like a business relationship than a My husband, however ,doesnt care how much I spend and our marriagenever become a business because it already was one. You could say, wehave a mutual understanding .We are very realistic about the wholething .It is painful
14、for my friends when they realize that love is just anillusion. Marriage for love never existed for me. And, he ll never divorceme d lose too much money.UNIT 4Love is important because without it life has no meaning or3purpose .ILove allows us to do more than we could ever accomplishwithout its power

So often we take good care of our physical needs .Wemake sure our bodies are fed ,cleaned ,clothed, exercised andrested .However ,we tend to overlook the most important need-love .Ofcourse, as a society ,love is not overlooked .Popular media constantlyplaces great emphasis on what we need to do to
16、 attract ” love”. But beingloved is not as powerful an emotional need as that desire to love someoneelse.The need to love and care for other is built into us biologically .Thisneed is what allows parents to give up sleep and food while raising theirchildren. This need is what allows people to put th
17、emselves at risk to saveother from natural disasters or threats.Love means to cherish ,hold dear, and treasure. We do not hurt, harm ,orcause pain to those we love ;rather, we seek to alleviate theirsuffering .Its not about wanting to possess or control others; its aboutwanting to set them free .Lov
18、e is the power that allows the wheel of lifeto continue turning ,for when we love beyond our own needs and desires.We sacrifice our time ,our energy, our wishes, and sometimes evenourselves because of love .It is love that allows emergency servicespersonnel to face danger. It is love that allows sol
19、diers to risk everything.The ultimate definition of love is not about feeling good but rather aboutdoing good.4UNIT 5Knock it ” Billy would not cease banging his foot on the table.Mrs.Stewart had lost all patience in telling him to stop. Her words werefalling on deaf ears .She had asked her son to q
20、uit doing sth. that wasbothering her so many times that she hardly even knew the words werecoming from her mouth .Billy had got used to this .He just ignored hiss expressions like these .He banged on without a pause.She used to try to phrase her words in positive ways like, ” When youbang on the tab
21、le that way ,it upsets me. Would you mind doing sth. elsethat is a little quieter? ”There was warmth in her voice and she had all ofthe best intentions. But when she actually managed to get Billys attentionin this way, he simply replied , But Im bored.She tried to offer him abunch of alternatives, b
22、ut nothing worked and it all became too tedious .Ithad become noticeable even to herself that she was increasingly usingnegative expressions.Mrs.Stewart seems to understand that even if she shouts she cant expectBilly to respond immediately. But she still believes that to keep onapplying the pressur
23、es might work someday .Children may learn thatarguing no longer works because of her continuous shouting.UNIT 6Whats in a name? Your fate could have been entirely different if youhad been given a different name at your birth. Some of us recognize that5our name does not necessarily fit and start usin
24、g a different name ratherthan the one we were given. Many of us choose to use our middle nameso we can be true to our parents, and at the same time be more confident.Some people who have changed their name claim that their professionallives improved .They feel better about themselves so they are mor
25、e likelyto achieve more .But those who have changed their names are not justbeing overly sensitive. Name themselves convey some informationcausing others to make judgment based solely on them .Here is anexample :A magazine declined to print a writers name simply becausethe editor thought it suited a
26、 baseball player more than an artcritic .Another example: A women at a party became embarrassed whenshe wanted to be introduced to a man she had declined because of hisname .One study showed that teachers give different grades to theidentical essays written by boys with different names. Similarly, g
27、irlspopularity can be related to their names.Yet, which name works and which does not depend on the times .Thegood qualities of a well-liked president or actor can often influence how aname is seen .But if a name becomes too well-known ,it might also fallout of favor as parents look for sth. a littl
28、e more unique for their child.UNIT 7I was in a bad temper .I was just like the stress in my life that wasrunning out of control .I could probably attribute it to financial6stress .My company was cutting jobs and they were evaluating eachworkers performance .This was inevitable in those days of risin
29、gcompetition and shrinking companies .The companies were gettingsmaller because of the hopeless economic conditions .I knew I was beingconsidered as one of the workers they would let go though I had beenoverworking .Or maybe it was my home life .My wife and I had gotten inan argument and my 19-year-
30、old daughter announced that she wasleaving the house to move in with her boyfriend.I am usually not a person of quick temper ,but yesterday was different .Irode my bike to work as its about 20 kilometers .I had stopped fora red light and then proceeded when the light turned green .I had assumedthe c
31、ar coming from my right would stop, but instead it went right onthrough the red light and nearly hit me .I barely had time to react .Igrabbed my bike lock and threw it at his car ,hitting his rear windowand making a crack.The driver stopped and got out of the car. 33、ncredible opportunities for young people exiting college.Trends toward specialized careers and lower salaries leave economistsand sociologists fearful that the next generation of employees will beconfined to roles that are too narrow and thus not regarding enough.Many say corporations are taking adv
34、antageof the labor force. But, noone is forcing our youth into such occupations. If a rewarding job doesnot existin the current system, they ll have to createit for themselves.The Internet has already answered students cries for more careerpossibilities. The next breakthrough to create something tru
35、ly creative isbound to happen anything now. At the same time lets ensure thatstudents are prepared for the day when their chances are coming.By telling our young people everything has already been done and thatthere is nothing left to dream about, we are robbing them of theopportunity to create a sy
36、stem that is new and exciting, outside theconfines of what is currently imaginable. But then again, maybe Imwrong. Maybe I shouldnt worry about our youth at all. Their ability tochallengewhat is before them and defy our unnecessary worries is theirgreat strength. Maybe by telling them they cant, we
37、are in effectencouraging them to create something truly incredible. All in all, thefuture for the young people is not gloomy; instead, it is promising.UNIT 9Journalists play a very important part in the way we see the world8around us .It is unfortunate that increasingly the standpoint of the reporte
38、ror the news agency is advanced in the story .This is not good reporting ,which should involve all of the key facts and an account of those facts inan objective manner .In this way ,the public can take the information andform its own opinion .It is the responsibility of the media to ensure thatthis
39、happens.Far too often these days ,reporters from scattered places around theglobe are looking for the most thrilling stories instead of focusing on thestories that are the most important .News has become a form ofentertainment rather than an accurate source of information .It used to bethat we could
