FUDANUNIVERSITYCollegeofForeignLanguagesandLiteratureDivisionIVofCollegeEnglishCenterAcademicEnglishforMedicalPurposeINSTRUCTORSName:Office:Phone:COURSEDESCRIPTIONThiscourseisdesignedandofferedtohelpthestudentswiththeirEnglishproficiencyinacademiccontextswheremedicineisthesubjectmatter.Therationalesthiscourseisbasedoninclude:1)shiftfromEnglishforGeneralPurpose(EGP)toEnglishforAcademicPurpose(EAP)andEnglishforSpecificPurposeisthetrendofEnglishteachingandlearningattertiarylevelinChina;2)althoughinseparable,EAPdiffersfromEGPinmanyrespectsandwairantsspecialattentionsothatthelearnersuseEnglishlanguageproficientlyandproperlyinacademiccontexts;and3)EnglishforAcademicPurposeentailsavastarrayofskillsandagoodknowledgeofthesubjectmatter.Thiscourse,therefore,isframedtoprovidethestudentswithopportunitiestoexposethemselvestothesubjectmatterrelatedtomedicine,todeveloplanguageproficiencyandskillsasneededforcommunicationinacademiccontexts,andtouseEnglishlanguageinsimulatedorrealsituationswhereEnglishlanguageservesasthemediumforcommunication.OBJECTIVESAttheendofthecourse,thestudentsareexpectedtoenrichthemselveswithknowledgeofcontentmattersuchastreatmentandpreventionofdiseases,alternativeandsupplementarymedicine,emergingandreemergingdiseases,etc.;expandbyalargemargintheirvocabulary,especiallythosespecializedtermsinmedicalcontext;beabletoprepareanddeliverPPTpresentationonthetopicsrelatedtomedicine;beproficientwhencommunicatinginacademiccontextsbefamiliarwiththecomponentsofatypicaljournalpaper,andthecharacteristicsofeachcomponent;buildupastockoflanguageforwritingjournalpapers.TextbookandTeachingMaterials《學(xué)術(shù)英語(醫(yī)學(xué))》.季佩英,孫慶祥等.2012.外語教學(xué)與研究出版社.JournalarticlesStudents'writingsRequirementsBeautonomousinyourEnglishlearning;Beengagedinout-of-classlisteningpractice;Readthetextcriticallyandgetreadyforanyactivityintheclassroom;Accomplishtheassignedoralpresentationinclass;Getdynamicallyinvolvedinanyclassroomactivities;Enlargeyourvocabularyandlanguageknowledgeandimproveyoursenseofthetargetlanguage;Enrichyourselfwithknowledgeofmedicine-relatedissues;Accomplishwritingassignments;Ensureyourattendance.ASSIGNMENTSWritingtasksWritingtasksbasedonthecontentsofthelectureswillbespecifiedinclass.Therequirementsforeachtaskvary,butthefollowingaresomegeneralconsiderations.Studentshavetosubmitthewrittentasksintheformatspecifiedbytheinstructor.Inanysubmissions,spellingmistakes,grammaticalerrorsasindicatedbyMicrosoftWordwithunderlinesinredshouldbecheckedandcorrectedbeforesubmission.Anelectronicwordcountshouldbeprovidedforallwrittentasks.Awordlimitof±10%appliestoallthewrittentasks.Forexample,ifthewordlimitis100,yoursubmissioncanbeinarangefrom90-110words(excludingappendicesorreferences).Theelectronicversionshouldbeemailedtotheinstructor2-3daysbeforetheduedatetoavoidallpossibledelayssuchascomputerbreakdownthenightbeforetheduedateorthee-mailmightbejammedsomewhereonline!Apaperversion,ifrequiredbytheinstructor,shouldbehandedintotheinstructorinclass.Writingtasksthatarehandedinontimewillbecorrectedgradedandreturnedpromptly,delayedsubmissions(within5workingdays)willbeevaluatedwithloweredcredits,andsubmissionsdelayedbylongerthan5workingdayswillnotbeaccepted.Ifyouhavetobeabsentonthedaytheassignmentisdue,turnitinatthefollowingsessionoftheclass.Absenceisnotanexcuseforlatersubmission.Writingtasksaccountfor10%inyourfinalgrade.ClassroomPresentationYouaresupposedtodeliver2-3-minutepresentationsonthegiventopicsrelatedtothecontentofthetext(TopicsforpresentationofTextA).Yourpresentationswillbeintegratedintootherclassroomactivitieswhentherelatedpartisdiscussed.YourpresentationisjudgedbyPREPARATION,PERTINENCE,FLUENCY,PRONUNCIATIONandREACTIONfromtheaudience.Yourpresentationsaccountfor10%inyourfinalgrade.TeamworkReportTheassignment,tobecompletedinagroupoffourorthree,istofurtheryourunderstandingofthetextcoveredinclass,tofacilitateyouractualuseoftargetlanguageincontext,andtobuildcooperationwithotherlearners.PreparationTheclassisdividedintogroupsaccordingtotheclasssize.Eachgroupelecttheirteamleader.Agroupwillbedesignatedtodealwithaparticularunit.Aweek'stimeisallowedforeachgrouptomakepreparation.TaskDesignEachgroupissupposedtocompleteResearchingandReportingasdescribedineachunitanddelivera1O-minutePPTreportasateam.Thestudentsareencouragedtousethelanguagelearnedfromthetext.ThePPTshouldbeemailedtotheinstructortwodaysaheadofthereport.EvaluationCriteriaforevaluationinclude:OverallImpression,Organization,Pertinence,UseofLanguage.Asateamworktask,aholisticapproachwillbetakenforthejudgmentoftheperformance,allowingdifferencesofasmallrangebetweenthescores.Theperformanceaccountsfor10%inthefinalgrade.AcademicHonestyStudentsshouldbewellawareofthepoliciesandregulationsconcerningacademichonestyinFudanUniversity.Studentsarebelievedtobehonest.Cheating,plagiarism,forgeryandknowinglyfurnishingfalseinformationinyouracademicworkareg
