(一)when，while都有“當(dāng)……時(shí)候”意思。when既可表示某一點(diǎn)時(shí)間，也能夠表示某一段時(shí)間。在when引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句中，其謂語動詞能夠是延續(xù)性，也能夠是非延續(xù)性，可與主句中謂語動詞同時(shí)發(fā)生，也可在其后發(fā)生。如：

Iwasjustreadingabookwhenshecameintomyroom.

她走進(jìn)我房間時(shí)，我正在看書。

Wereyouwritingwhentheteachercamein?

老師進(jìn)來時(shí)候，你在寫信嗎？

Whenhewasachild,hewasalwaystryingoutnewideas.

他小時(shí)候就經(jīng)常試驗(yàn)一些新構(gòu)想。

(二)while只能表示某一段時(shí)間，不能表示某一點(diǎn)時(shí)間。在while引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句中，其謂語動詞只能是延續(xù)性，而且也只能與主句中謂語動詞同時(shí)發(fā)生或存在。如：

WhileJimwasmendinghisbike,LinTaocametoseehim.

正當(dāng)吉姆修自行車時(shí)，林濤來看他。

Youcan’tdoyourhomeworkwhileyou’rewatchingTV.

你不能一邊看電視一邊做家庭作業(yè)。

(三)when和while區(qū)分還在于:while引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句多用進(jìn)行時(shí)態(tài)，而when引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句多用普通時(shí)態(tài)。如：

Whiletheyweretalking,thebellrang.

他們談話時(shí)候，上課鈴響了。

Iwasdoingmyhomeworkwhenmymothercamebackhomeyesterdayevening.

as所表示動作與主句同時(shí)發(fā)生，含有延續(xù)含義，普通與延續(xù)行動詞連用。如：

醫(yī)生給他做檢驗(yàn)時(shí)，疼痛加劇了。

Iwascominginashewasgoingout.

他進(jìn)來時(shí)候我正出去。注意

(1)如主句謂語動詞表示是短暫動作，從句時(shí)間狀語指一段時(shí)間，when,while,as三者可通用。

(2)as和while可用來指一段時(shí)間，但as強(qiáng)調(diào)主句與從句表示動作同時(shí)發(fā)生，while強(qiáng)調(diào)主句表示動作是在while從句動作延續(xù)中發(fā)生。
