我不知說(shuō)什么好了。我不知道這邊有一個(gè)帶麥克風(fēng)的講臺(tái)。我還以為只要唱幾首歌就好了。不是說(shuō)那不重要。

哦,我的老天,多么大的一份榮譽(yù)。在這里看著大家,我既誠(chéng)惶誠(chéng)恐,又激動(dòng)萬(wàn)分。

重新回到這里真的是…我為自己曾在此學(xué)習(xí)過(guò)而感到自豪。已經(jīng)是16年前了,但是…我以前經(jīng)常一個(gè)人在周末來(lái)到交響樂(lè)大廳,搶一些所謂的“趕急票”,來(lái)欣賞波士頓交響樂(lè)團(tuán)的表演。

AnditwasoneofthehighlightsofmytimehereatBerklee,sobeinghere

onstageisreallyunreal.Walkingaroundoncampustodaywasatestamenttohow

farBerklee'scomeinthelast16years.Itisbeautiful,thecampus,the

facilities.IwaswalkingbytheMP&E,thestudios,theequipment,the

fitnesscenter.Wedidn'thaveanyofthesestuffs.SoIguessyouguyshave

beendoingaprettygoodjob.Sothankyou,andcongratulationstothat.Whata

timefortheEastandWestinmusic,inpopculture.

這是我在伯克利學(xué)習(xí)生活的眾多亮點(diǎn)之一了,所以能來(lái)到這個(gè)臺(tái)上實(shí)屬不易。今天我在校園漫步,感受到了母校在這16年間的變化之大。她太美了,無(wú)論是環(huán)境還是設(shè)施。我還路過(guò)MP&E,那些工作室,一些設(shè)施,對(duì)了還有一個(gè)健身中心。我們那會(huì)兒可沒(méi)有這玩意兒。所以校方的努力非常的棒,謝謝你們,也祝賀你們。這是一個(gè)東西方在音樂(lè)、流行文化中交流的偉大時(shí)代。

letterIgotbackbegan,"Regrettably,Princetonreceivesmanymorequalified

applicantsforfacultypositionsthanwecanaccommodate."

重返普林斯頓感覺(jué)不錯(cuò),很難相信,我離開(kāi)校園赴華盛頓已經(jīng)11年了。近期我向校方詢(xún)問(wèn)了我的教職問(wèn)題,回信稱(chēng):“很遺憾,普林斯頓收到很多更有才華的學(xué)者的求職信,而教職有限。”

thataccomplishment,astheyshouldhavebeen.Butmycolleaguealsousedtosay

that,fromafinancialperspective,theexperiencewaslikebuyinganew

Cadillaceveryyearandthendrivingitoffacliff.Ishouldsaythathealways

addedthathewoulddoitalloveragaininaminute.So,welldone,moms,dads,

andfamilies.

confidence,and,anyway,covetingyourneighbor'soxordonkeyisnotthe

problemitusedtobe,soIthoughtIwouldusemyfewminutestodaytomakeTen

Suggestions,ormaybejustTenObservations,abouttheworldandyourlives

afterPrinceton.Pleasenote,thesepointshavenothingwhatsoevertodowith

interestrates.Myqualificationformakingsuchsuggestions,orobservations,

besideshavingkindlybeeninvitedtospeaktodaybyPresidentTilghman,isthe

sameasthereasonthatyourobnoxiousbrotherorsistergottogotobed

later--Iamolderthanyou.Allofwhatfollowshasbeenroad-testedin

real-lifesituations,butpastperformanceisnoguaranteeoffutureresults.

Economics101inAlexanderHallandtryingtothinkofgoodexcusesforavoiding

facultymeetings.ThenIgotaphonecall...Incaseyouareskepticalof

ForrestGump'sinsight,here'saconcretesuggestionforeachofthegraduating

seniors.Takeafewminutesthefirstchanceyougetandtalktoanalum

participatinginhisorher25th,or30th,or40threunion--youknow,somebody

whowasnearthefrontoftheP-rade.Askthem,backwhentheyweregraduating

25,30,or40yearsago,wheretheyexpectedtobetoday.Ifyoucangetthemto

openup,theywilltellyouthattodaytheyarehappyandsatisfiedinvarious

measures,ornot,andtheirpersonalstorieswillbefilledwithhighsandlows

andin-betweens.But,Iamwillingtobet,thoselifestorieswillinalmostall

casesbequitedifferent,inlargeandsmallways,fromwhattheyexpectedwhen

theystartedout.Thisisagoodthing,notabadthing;whowantstoknowthe

endofastorythat'sonlyinitsearlychapters?Don'tbeafraidtoletthe

dramaplayout.

1、阿甘曾講到人生和巧克力的相似性,你不知道下一塊巧克力的味道。人生確實(shí)難以預(yù)料,任何一個(gè)認(rèn)為知道其10年后情況的畢業(yè)生,更不同說(shuō)三十年了,我只能說(shuō)他或她缺乏想象力??纯次野桑?2年前我一心教經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)入門(mén)課程,想著編造什么理由不參加教學(xué)會(huì)議,結(jié)果我接到了那個(gè)電話(huà)。有過(guò)你有機(jī)會(huì)與畢業(yè)25年、30年或40年的校友交談,并使他們敞開(kāi)心扉,他們將告訴你,他們對(duì)生活中哪些事滿(mǎn)意或不滿(mǎn)意,他們經(jīng)歷過(guò)的高潮和低谷。但我敢打賭,他們的人生故事將與預(yù)期相異。這是好事而不是壞事,誰(shuí)想在故事的開(kāi)篇就知道結(jié)局呢?

grand,lifelongproject,andthatisthedevelopmentofyourselfasahuman

being.YourfamilyandfriendsandyourtimeatPrincetonhavegivenyouagood

start.Whatwillyoudowithit?Willyoukeeplearningandthinkinghardand

criticallyaboutthemostimportantquestions?Willyoubecomeanemotionally

strongerperson,moregenerous,moreloving,moreethical?Willyouinvolve

yourselfactivelyandconstructivelyintheworld?Manythingswillhappenin

yourlives,pleasantandnotsopleasant,but,paraphrasingaWoodrowWilson

SchooladagefromthetimeIwashere,"Whereveryougo,thereyouare."Ifyou

arenothappywithyourself,eventheloftiestachievementswon'tbringyoumuch

satisfaction.

是否人生偶然性之大的事實(shí),意味著小的決定和行動(dòng)無(wú)足輕重,不需要規(guī)劃和奮斗呢?當(dāng)然不是。無(wú)論未來(lái)人生如何,她將是一個(gè)宏大和漫長(zhǎng)的項(xiàng)目,是你作為個(gè)人

的發(fā)展過(guò)程。你的家人、朋友和你在普林斯頓的時(shí)光已經(jīng)為你造就了良好的開(kāi)端,未來(lái)你會(huì)如何?你會(huì)不斷學(xué)習(xí)、竭力思索、對(duì)至關(guān)重要的問(wèn)題持批判態(tài)度嗎?你會(huì)

成為情感上更強(qiáng)大、更大度、更有愛(ài)心、更道德的人嗎?你會(huì)更積極的、更建設(shè)性的參與世事嗎?你的人生會(huì)有很多故事,快樂(lè)的,及不太快樂(lè)的,如果你不為自己

感到快樂(lè),就連最偉大的成就業(yè)也不會(huì)讓你感到滿(mǎn)足。

3.Theconceptofsuccessleadsmetoconsiderso-calledmeritocraciesand

theirimplications.Wehavebeentaughtthatmeritocraticinstitutionsand

societiesarefair.Puttingasidetherealitythatnosystem,includingourown,

isreallyentirelymeritocratic,meritocraciesmaybefairerandmoreefficient

thansomealternatives.Butfairinanabsolutesense?Thinkaboutit.A

meritocracyisasysteminwhichthepeoplewhoaretheluckiestintheirhealth

andgeneticendowment;luckiestintermsoffamilysupport,encouragement,and,

probably,income;luckiestintheireducationalandcareeropportunities;and

luckiestinsomanyotherwaysdifficulttoenumerate--thesearethefolkswho

reapthelargestrewards.Theonlywayforevenaputativemeritocracytohope

topassethicalmuster,tobeconsideredfair,isifthosewhoaretheluckiest

inallofthoserespectsalsohavethegreatestresponsibilitytoworkhard,to

contributetothebettermentoftheworld,andtosharetheirluckwithothers.

AstheGospelofLukesays(andIamsuremyrabbiwillforgivemeforquoting

theNewTestamentinagoodcause):"Fromeveryonetowhommuchhasbeengiven,

muchwillberequired;andfromtheonetowhommuchhasbeenentrusted,even

morewillbedemanded"(Luke12:48,NewRevisedStandardVersionBible).Kindof

gradingonthecurve,youmightsay.

littleformalschoolingbutlaborhonestlyanddiligentlytohelpfeed,clothe,

andeducatetheirfamiliesaredeservingofgreaterrespect--andhelp,if

necessary--thanmanypeoplewhoaresuperficiallymoresuccessful.They'remore

funtohaveabeerwith,too.That'sallthatIknowaboutsociology.

4、誰(shuí)值得尊重?是那些充分利用其優(yōu)勢(shì),或勇敢面對(duì)逆境的人。我想我們會(huì)認(rèn)同,那些雖然接受的正式教育不多,但誠(chéng)實(shí)勞動(dòng)、勤勉的為家人提供衣食和教育的人,相比更多表面上很成功的人,更值得尊重,和他們喝兩杯是更有趣的事情。

5.SinceIhavecoveredwhatIknowaboutsociology,Imightaswellsay

somethingaboutpoliticalscienceaswell.Inregardtopolitics,Ihavealways

likedLilyTomlin'sline,inparaphrase:"Itrytobecynical,butIjustcan't

keepup."Weallfeelthatwaysometime.Actually,havingbeeninWashingtonnow

foralmost11years,asImentioned,Ifeelthatwayquiteabit.Ultimately,

though,cynicismisapoorsubstituteforcriticalthoughtandconstructive

action.Sure,interestsandmoneyandideologyallmatter,asyoulearnedin

politicalscience.Butmyexperienceisthatmostofourpoliticiansand

policymakersaretryingtodotherightthing,accordingtotheirownviewsand

consciences,mostofthetime.Ifyouthinkthatthebadorindifferentresults

thattoooftencomeoutofWashingtonareduetobasemotivesandbad

intentions,youaregivingpoliticiansandpolicymakerswaytoomuchcreditfor

beingeffective.Honesterrorinthefaceofcomplexandpossiblyintractable

problemsisafarmoreimportantsourceofbadresultsthanarebadmotives.For

thesereasons,thegreatestforcesinWashingtonareideas,andpeopleprepared

toactonthoseideas.Publicserviceisn'teasy.But,intheend,ifyouare

inclinedinthatdirection,itisaworthyandchallengingpursuit.

提到政治,憤世嫉俗是批判性思考和建設(shè)性行動(dòng)的更糟糕的替代品。當(dāng)然,利益、金錢(qián)和意識(shí)形態(tài)都有影響力,如你在政治課上所學(xué)。但我的感受是大部分政界人士

6.Havingtakenastabatsociologyandpoliticalscience,letmewrapup

economicswhileI'matit.Economicsisahighlysophisticatedfieldofthought

thatissuperbatexplainingtopolicymakerspreciselywhythechoicestheymade

inthepastwerewrong.Aboutthefuture,notsomuch.However,carefuleconomic

analysisdoeshaveoneimportantbenefit,whichisthatitcanhelpkillideas

thatarecompletelylogicallyinconsistentorwildlyatvariancewiththedata.

Thisinsightcoversatleast90percentofproposedeconomicpolicies.

wouldn'tbelievemeanyway.Infact,fortoomanypeoplearoundtheworld,money

isliterallyalife-or-deathproposition.Butifyouarepartofthelucky

minoritywiththeabilitytochoose,rememberthatmoneyisameans,notanend.

Acareerdecisionbasedonlyonmoneyandnotonloveoftheworkoradesireto

makeadifferenceisarecipeforunhappiness.

7、我不會(huì)告訴你們金錢(qián)無(wú)用,反正你們也不會(huì)聽(tīng)的。事實(shí)上,對(duì)全球很多人來(lái)說(shuō),金錢(qián)能夠決定生存還是死亡。但如果你屬于那些幸運(yùn)得有能力進(jìn)行抉擇的少數(shù)人,請(qǐng)記住,金錢(qián)只是途徑,而非最終目標(biāo)。職業(yè)選擇基于收入、而非熱愛(ài),或做出貢獻(xiàn)的熱情,是日后苦惱的根源。

8.Nobodylikestofailbutfailureisanessentialpartoflifeandof

learning.Ifyouruniformisn'tdirty,youhaven'tbeeninthegame.

Inmakingthatchoice,rememberthatphysicalbeautyisevolution'swayof

assuringusthattheotherpersondoesn'thavetoomanyintestinalparasites.

Don'tgetmewrong,Iamallforbeauty,romance,andsexualattraction--where

wouldHollywoodandMadisonAvenuebewithoutthem?Butwhileimportant,those

arenottheonlythingstolookforinapartner.Thetwoofyouwillhavea
