Inthelastdecade,theseso-called"Eco-terrorists"havebeenresponsibleformorethan$100millionindamages.Andtheirtacticsarebeginningtoescalate.

Somesplintergroupshavesetoffhomemadebombsandthreatenedtokillpeople.As

firstreportedlastNovember,thingshavegottensobad,theFBInowconsidersthemthecountry'sbiggestdomesticterroristthreat.

Thebiggestactofeco-terrorisminU.S.historywasafire,deliberatelysetonthenightofAugust1,2003,thatdestroyedanearly-completed$23millionapartmentcomplexjustoutsideSanDiego.Thefirewassettoprotesturbansprawl.

"ItwasthebiggestfireIhaveeverrespondedtoasafirefighter,"remembersJeffCarle,adivisionchieffortheSanDiegoFireDepartment."Thatfirewasnotstoppable.Atthestagethatthefirewasinwhenwearrived,therewereproblemsintheadjacentoccupiedapartmentcomplexes.Pinetreeswerestartingtocatchfire.Itemsonpatioswerestartingtolightupandcatchfire.Andwehadtodirectouractivitytowardssavinglifebeforewecoulddoanythingabouttheproperty."

Hundredswererousedfromtheirbedsandevacuated.Luckily,nobody–includingfirefighters–wasinjured.Bythetimethefireburneditselfoutthenextmorning,allthatremainedwasa12-foot-longbannerthatread:"Ifyoubuildit,wewillburnit."Alsoonthebannerwastheacronym:E-L-F.

WhenCarlesawthebanner,hesaysheknewhehadaproblem.

Aproblem,becauseheknewwhatELFstoodfor:theEarthLiberationFront,themostradicalfringeoftheenvironmentalmovement.It'sthesamegroupthatsetninesimultaneousfiresacrosstheVailMountainskiresortin1998toprotestitsexpansion,causing$12millionindamage.

AnditisthesamegroupthathasleftSUVdealershipsacrossAmericalookinglikescenesfromIraq'sSunnitriangle,theirwayofprotestingthegas-guzzlinghabitsofAmericancarbuyers.

TheELFisaspin-offofanothergroupcalledtheALF,orAnimalLiberationFront,whosemaskedmembershavebeenknowntovideotapethemselvesbreakingintoresearchlabs,wheretheydestroyyearsofpainstakingworkandfreecaptiveanimals.Inrecentyears,they'vecappedofftheirvisitsbyburningdownthebuildings.Still,theyinsisttheyarenon-violent.

"ForeveryarsonthatI'vecarriedout,there'sprobablythreeorfourthatwerenotcarriedoutforthatfearofinjuringsomebody,"saysRodCoronado,aformerALFleader,whoiswidely-creditedwithintroducingarsontothecause.

Hespentfouryearsinprisonforsettingsixfires,includingoneatMichiganStateUniversity.

Whyburndownabuilding?

"It'ssimplybecauseafteryearsofrescuinganimalsfromlaboratories,itwasheartbreakingtoseethosebuildingsandthosecagesrefilledwithinthefollowingdays.Andforthatreason,arsonhasbecomeanecessarytool,"saysCoronado.

CoronadosaystheALFandELFoperateinsmallautonomous"cells."Hesaysheusuallyworkedwithfiveorlesspeople.

Askedhowafterchoosingatarget,amissioniscarriedout,Coronadosays,"Thosearethetypesofthingsthattakenightsandnightsandweeksandweeksofreconnaissancetomakesurethatyouknowintheonehourthatyou'regoingtotakeaction,thattherewillbeabsolutelynorisktoanylivingbeing.ThefactthatnobodywaseverinjuredinanyoftheactionsthatI'vebeenaccusedofisnotacoincidence."

Coronadosaysthesedays,he'ssimplyanunofficialspokespersonfortheALFandELF.Andinthatrole,hetravelsacrossthecountrygivinglecturesonthegroups'philosophiesandtactics.

ManyinlawenforcementbelieveCoronadoisstillactiveinthemovementasanorganizerandrecruiter.HerecentlyfoundaGPStrackingdeviceunderhisJeep,whichhebelieveswasplantedbytheFBI.And,hejusthappenedtohaveaspeakingengagementinSanDiegothedayafterthefire.

Coronadosaysheknewnothingaboutthecondocomplexfire,yethehastraveledaroundthecountryandencouragepeopletodothissortofthing.

"Encouragementthroughexplanationanddemonstrationofmyownactions,"saysCoronado."I'veshowedthemhowIsetfires.IshowedthemhowtheELFandtheALF,whattheirmodeofoperationis."

tograntwhathecalled"thegroup'sfirstoncamerainterviewin20years,"aslongaswedidn'tseehisfaceorrecordhisvoice.

Hetoldusthathiscellhasconductedoperationsfromcoasttocoast,andeveryoneofthemwaswhatheconsideredtobenon-violentbecausenobodywasinjured.Hesaidunderthemaskheisanormal,otherwiselaw-abidingcitizen,andthathisfriendsandfamilyhavenoideaabouthisactivities.Hesaidhethinksit's"abysmal"thattheFBIconsidersthemAmerica'stopdomesticterroristthreat,becauseunlikeneo-Nazigroups,theALFhasneverhurtanyone."HavingtheFBIchaseyouaroundisnotagoodthing,"saysJohnLewis,aDeputyAssistantDirectorforCounterterrorismattheFBI.Lewisisthemanchargedwithstampingouteco-terrorismintheUnitedStates.

Lewissaysthebureauisawareofover1,000attacksandsaysthesegroupsareconsideredsuchathreatisbecausetheyhavecausedover$100millionworthofdamagenationwide.Hesaystherearemorethan150investigationsofeco-terroristcrimesunderway.

Headmitsthey'renotinthesameleagueasalQaedabuthesaysthey'reratchetinguptheiractionsandturninguptherhetoric.

"Therehavebeenmultiplestatementsmaderegardingassassinationand/orkillingofindividualsinvolvedin,forinstance,biomedicalresearchandthatkindofthing,"saysLewis.

CaseinpointisDr.JerryVlasak,apracticingtraumasurgeoninLosAngeles,whoalsoactsasaspokespersonforseveralextremeanimalrightsgroups.Vlasakhastoldaudiencesthatit'stimetoconsiderassassinatingpeoplewhodoresearchonanimals.

Vlasakhasbeenquotedassaying'Ithinkforfivelives,tenlives,15humanlives,wecouldsaveamillion,twomillion,tenmillionnonhumanlives.'

"Ithinkpeoplewhotortureinnocentbeingsshouldbestopped.Andiftheywon'tstopwhenyouaskthemnicely,theywon'tstopwhenyoudemonstratetothemwhatthey'redoingiswrong,thentheyshouldbestoppedusingwhatevermeansnecessary,"Vlasakreplied.

Vlasaksaysheisnotgoingtodothat,pointingoutheisaphysician."Myroleinthemovementisnottogooutanddothat,buttoexplaintothemainstreammediaandtothepublicingeneralwhythesepeoplearedoingwhatthey'redoing."

Vlasaksayssomeonewhobelievesthatthelifeofananimalisnotakintothelifeofahumanbeingis"species-ist."

"Justlikeatonetimeblackhumanswereconsideredproperty.Well,dogs,catsandallotheranimalsinoursocietyarestillconsideredproperty,"Vlasaksays.
