"Peoplemadethemtocommunicatesymbolicmessages,thewaythattodaywemightwearawedding

ring,toindicatesomethingaboutsocialstatus,wealthorpositioninsociety,"saidJenniferMiller,a

postdoctoralresearcherintheDepartmentofArchaeologyattheMaxPlanckInstitutefortheScienceof

HunanHistory,inJena,Germany.

Theystudied1,516beads(1,238ofwhichweredescribedforthefirsttime)thatoriginatedfrom31

differentsitesacrosssouthernandeasternAfricaandspanned(跨越)thelast50,000years.Comparingthe

differentcharacteristicsofthebeads-thesizeandthickness,theyfoundthatbetween33,()00and50,0(X)

yearsago,peopleatsitesacrosssouthernandeasternAfrica-spanningadistanceofmorethan3,000

kilometers(about1,864miles)—wereusingalmostidenticalbeads.

"Weknowthatgeneticallythesegroupshadsomesortofcontact,buttheresofarhasbeennocultural

evidence,HsaidMiller,whowasanauthorofthestudy,whichwaspublishedonMondayinthejournal

Nature.TheoldestbeadscomefromEastAfrica,thestudyfound,andlikelyspreadsouthacrossthe
