Ifgreatervoltageaccuracyisrequired,takeintoaccounttheoutputvoltageoffsetcontributionsbecauseofthefeedbackpincurrentanduse0.1%toleranceresistors.ENABLEPINTheTPS7A4201providesanenablepin(EN)featurethatturnsontheregulatorwhenVEN>1.5 Lowequivalentseries (ESR)capacitorsshouldbeusedfortheinput,output,andbypasscapacitors.CeramiccapacitorswithX7RandX5Rdielectricsarepreferred.Thesedielectricsoffermorestablecharacteristics.CeramicX7Rcapacitorsofferimprovedover-temperatureperformance,whileceramicX5Rcapacitorsarethemostcost-effectiveandareavailableinhighervalues.NotethathighESRcapacitorsmaydegradeINPUTANDOUTPUTCAPACITORTheTPS7A4201highvoltagelinearregulatorachievesstabilitywithaminimumoutputcapacitanceof4.7μFandinputcapacitanceof1μF;however,itishighly mendedtouse10-μFoutputandinputcapacitorstoizeacperformance.BYPASSCAPACITORAlthoughabypasscapacitor(CBYP)isnotneededtoachievestability,itishighly mendedtousea10-nFbypasscapacitortoizeacperformance(includinglinetransient,noiseandPSRR).UMACInorderto izelinetransient,noise,andPSRRperformance,itis mendedtoinclude10-μF(orhigher)inputandoutputcapacitors,anda10-nFbypasscapacitor,asshowninFigure12.Thesolutionshowndeliversminimumnoiselevelsof58μVRMSandpower-supplyrejectionlevelsabove36dBfrom10Hzto10MHz.TRANSIENTAswithanyregulator,increasingthesizeoftheoutputcapacitorreducesover/undershootmagnitudebutincreasesdurationofthetransientresponse.NotethatthepresenceoftheCBYPcapacitormaygreatlyimprovetheTPS7A4201linetransientresponse,asnotedin.TRANSIENTVOLTAGEPROTECTIONOneoftheprimaryapplicationsoftheTPS7A4201istoprovidetransientvoltageprotectiontosensitivecircuitrythatmaybedamagedinthepresenceofhigh-voltagees.Thistransientvoltageprotectioncanbemorecost-effectiveandcompactcomparedtotopologiesthatuseatransientvoltagesuppression(TVS)block.LEDARRAYILED=28TheTPS7A4201canbeusedtodriveILED=28Figure13.LEDArrayDriverTheTPS7A4201highvoltageratingmakesitsuitablenotonlyfordrivingtheintensityofanarrayofmultipleLEDsbyusinga mendedthattheboardbedesignedwithseparategroundnesforINandOUT,witheachgroundneconnectedonlyattheGNDpinofthedevice.Inaddition,thegroundconnectionfortheoutputcapacitorshouldconnectdirectlytotheGNDpinofthedevice.Equivalentseriesinductance(ESL)andESRmustbeminimizedinorderto izeperformanceandensurestability.Everycapacitor(CIN,COUT,CBYP)mustbecedascloseaspossibletothedeviceandonthesamesideofthePCBastheregulatoritself.DonotceanyofthecapacitorsontheoppositesideofthePCBfromwheretheregulatorisinstalled.Theuseofviasandlongtracesisstronglydiscouragedbecausetheymayimpactsystemperformancenegativelyandevencauseinstability.Ifpossible,andtoensurethe umperformancedenotedinthisproductdatasheet,usethesamelayoutpatternusedforTPS7A42evaluationboard,availableatTHERMALThermalprotectiondisablestheoutputwhenthejunctiontemperaturerisestoapproximay+170°C,allowingthedevicetocool.Whenthejunctiontemperaturecoolstoapproximay+150°C,theoutputcircuitryisenabled.Dependingonpowerdissipation,thermal ,andambienttemperature,thethermalprotectioncircuitmaycycleonandoff.Thiscyclinglimitsthedissipationoftheregulator,protectingitfromdamageasaresultofAnytendencytoactivatethethermalprotectioncircuitindicatesexcessivepowerdissipationoraninadequateheatsink.Forreliableoperation,junctiontemperatureshouldbelimitedtoaumof+125°C.Toestimatethemarginofsafetyinacompletedesign(includingheatsink),increasetheambienttemperatureuntilthethermalprotectionistriggered;useworst-caseloadsandsignalconditions.Forgoodreliability,thermalprotectionshouldtriggeratleast+35°Cabovethe umexpectedambientconditionoftheparticularapplication.Thisconfigurationproducesaworst-casejunctiontemperatureof+125°Catthehighestexpectedambienttemperatureandworst-caseload.TheinternalprotectioncircuitryoftheTPS7A4201hasbeendesignedtoprotectagainstoverloadconditions.Itwasnotintendedtoreceproperheatsinking.ContinuouslyrunningtheTPS7A4201intothermalshutdowndegradesdevicereliability.POWERTheabilitytoremoveheatfromthedieisdifferentforeachpackagetype,presentingdifferentconsiderationsinthePCBlayout.ThePCBareaaroundthedevicethatisofothercomponentsmovestheheatfromthedevicetotheambientair.PerformancedataforJEDEClow-andhigh-KboardsaregivenintheDissipationRatingsTable.Usingheaviercopperincreasestheeffectivenessinremovingheatfromthedevice.Theadditionoftedthrough-holestoheatdissipatinglayersalsoimprovestheheatsinkeffectiveness.Powerdissipationdependsoninputvoltageandloadconditions.Powerdissipation(PD)isequaltotheproductoftheoutputcurrenttimesthevoltagedropacrosstheoutputpasselement,asshowninEquation2:PD=(VINVOUT)
