Foreword

TheInternationalEnergyAgency(IEA)wasestablishedin1974topromoteenergysecurityandprovideauthoritativeanalysisonenergyforitsmembercountriesandbeyond.EnergystatisticshavealwaysbeenandremainattheheartoftheworkoftheIEA.Theyprovideacomprehensiveviewonenergyproduction,transformationandfinaluseforallformsofenergyaswellasthefactorsthatinfluenceenergychoicessuchaspricesandRD&DandthewiderimpactofenergyuseonCO2emissions.Overtheyearswithinputfromenergystatisticiansallaroundtheworld,theIEAhasgainedrecognitionastheworld’smostauthoritativesourceforenergystatistics.

Energystatisticsareproducedtobeused:tomonitorchangesinenergyproductionanduse;informdebate;andprovideawiderunderstandingofenergy,includinghelpingcountriesunderstandtheirenergytransitions.InKeyWorldEnergyStatistics(KWES),welooktohighlightsomeofthekeyfactsandtrendsfromacrossthevastnumberofdatasetstheIEAproducestoenableeveryonetoknowmoreaboutenergy.AspartoftheIEAmodernisationprogramme,KWEScontainsmoreinformationonenergyefficiencyandrenewables,moregeographicdata–including

onthe“IEA

Family”,createdthroughour“OpenDoors”policy–andmoreofthekeydatatobetterunderstandenergysecurity–theheartofourwork.

Becauseenergyplayssuchavitalroleinourlivestoday,Ihopethatthesestatisticswillnotonlyinformbutalsohelppolicymakersandotherstomakewisedecisionssothatenergyisproducedandconsumedinasecure,affordable,efficient,andsustainablemanner.AsIliketosay,intheworldofenergy,dataalwayswins.Thishasneverbeenmoretruethanitistoday,withtheworldeconomyundergoingsignificantstructuralchangeasaconsequenceofCovid-19.IwouldthereforeliketothankthewholeteamintheIEA’sEnergyDataCentreundertheoutstandingleadershipofNickJohnstonefortheirworkinensuringweallhavethedataneededtogainacomprehensiveunderstandingofenergytodaysothatwecanbetterplanfortomorrow.
