Abstract:
Inthispaper,thefrictionandwearperformanceoffastnickelplatingcoatingsunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasiveswerestudied.Thenickelplatingcoatingswerepreparedonmediumcarbonsteelsubstrateswithathicknessof20micronsusinganelectroplatingmethod.Thefrictionandweartestingwascarriedoutusingapin-on-disktribometerwithSiCabrasivesin5W30engineoilasthelubricant.Theresultsshowedthatthesurfacemorphologyandmicrostructureofthecoatingswereuniformandcompact.Thecoatingsdemonstratedgoodanti-wearandfrictionreductionperformanceunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives,whichcouldsignificantlyimprovetheservicelifeoftheparts.
Introduction:
Inthefieldofmechanicalengineering,thedemandforhigh-performancecoatingshasbeenincreasingrecently.Nickelplatingcoatingsarewidelyusedduetotheirgoodcorrosionresistanceandwearresistance.However,undertheconditionsofoillubricationwithabrasives,thewearresistanceofnickelplatingcoatingsstillneedstobeimproved.Therefore,itisimportanttostudythefrictionandwearperformanceoffastnickelplatingcoatingsunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives.
ExperimentalMethods:
Themediumcarbonsteelsubstrateswerepolishedandcleanedbeforebeingelectrolyzedinanickelsulfamatesolutionusinganelectroplatingmethodtopreparefastnickelplatingcoatings.Theplatingparameterswereasfollows:voltage3V,temperature60°C,andtime30minutes.Thethicknessofthecoatingswasabout20microns.Thesurfacemorphologyandmicrostructureofthecoatingswereobservedusingascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)andenergydispersiveX-ray(EDX)spectroscopy.
Thefrictionandweartestingwascarriedoutusingapin-on-disktribometerin5W30engineoilwithSiCabrasiveswithasizeof320mesh.Theloadwas10N,andtheslidingspeedwas1m/s.Thefrictionalcoefficientandwearratewererecordedandanalyzed.
ResultsandDiscussion:
TheSEMimagesofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsshowedthatthesurfacemorphologyofthecoatingswasuniformandcompact.Thecoatingmicrostructurewascomposedofequiaxedandcolumnarcrystals.TheEDXanalysisshowedthatthecoatingshadahighpurityofnickelandnoimpurities.
Underoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives,thecoatingsshowedgoodanti-wearandfrictionreductionproperties.Thefrictioncoefficientofthecoatingswasreducedbymorethan50%comparedtotheuncoatedsubstrate.Thewearrateofthecoatingswasalsosignificantlyreducedbymorethan80%comparedtotheuncoatedsubstrate.Thisindicatedthatthefastnickelplatingcoatingshadexcellentanti-wearandfrictionreductionpropertiesunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives.
Conclusion:
Thefastnickelplatingcoatingspreparedinthisstudyshowedgoodanti-wearandfrictionreductionpropertiesunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives.Thecoatingscansignificantlyimprovethewearresistanceofthepartsandprolongtheirservicelife.Therefore,thefastnickelplatingcoatingshavegreatpotentialforapplicationsinthefieldofmechanicalengineeringunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasives.Inadditiontotheaboveresults,themechanismoftheanti-wearandfrictionreductionpropertiesofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasivesneedstobeexploredfurther.Itisspeculatedthattheuniformandcompactsurfacemorphologyandmicrostructureofthecoatingsplayanimportantroleinreducingwearandfriction.Theequiaxedandcolumnarcrystalstructureofthecoatingsensuresthatthesurfacetextureisuniformandimprovesitsmechanicalproperties.Also,thehighpurityofthenickelcoatingsmaycontributetoitsgoodwearresistanceandfrictionreductionproperties.
Furthermore,futureworkcouldfocusonoptimizingtheelectroplatingprocessandparameterstoimprovetheperformanceofthefastnickelplatingcoatings.Thedevelopmentofmulti-layerandcompositecoatingsandthestudyoftheirpropertiesunderoillubricatedconditionswithabrasivescouldalsobepursued.
Overall,thisstudyprovidesapromisingapproachforimprovingthewearresistanceandfrictionreductionofpartsinmechanicalengineeringunderoillubricationwithabrasives,andthefastnickelplatingcoatingshavethepotentialtobewidelyusedinthisfield.Anotheraspectthatrequiresfurtherinvestigationistheeffectofdifferenttypesandconcentrationsofabrasivesonthewearandfrictionpropertiesofthefastnickelplatingcoatings.ThecurrentstudyusedSiCparticlesastheabrasives,butothertypessuchasdiamond,alumina,ortitaniumdioxide,couldhavedifferenteffectsontheperformanceofthecoatings.Additionally,theconcentrationofabrasivesintheoillubricantcouldalsoinfluencetheoutcome.
Moreover,thetribologicalbehaviorofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsunderdifferentloads,speeds,andtemperaturesneedstobeexploredfurthertoprovideamorecomprehensiveunderstandingoftheirperformance.Wearandfrictionpropertiescanvarydependingonthesefactors,andthecoatingsneedtobeevaluatedunderarangeofoperatingconditionstodeterminetheirreliabilityandapplicability.
Furthermore,moredetailedanalysisofthewearmechanismsandtheformationofthewornsurfacesofthecoatingsneedstobecarriedout.Thiscouldprovideinsightintothedurabilityandstabilityofthecoatingsandallowforfurtheroptimization.
Inconclusion,thepromisingresultsofthecurrentstudyhighlightthepotentialoffastnickelplatingcoatingstoimprovethewearresistanceandfrictionreductionofmechanicalpartsunderoillubricationwithabrasives.However,moreresearchisrequiredtofullyunderstandtheunderlyingmechanismsandoptimizethecoating'sperformanceforvariedoperatingconditions.Moreover,theimpactoftheprocessingparametersonthepropertiesofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsshouldalsobeexplored.Thecurrentstudyusedspecificconditionssuchasthecurrentdensity,pHvalue,andtemperaturefortheelectroplatingprocess.However,varyingtheseparameterscanpotentiallyalterthemicrostructure,chemicalcomposition,andpropertiesofthecoatings.Theinfluenceofsuchvariationsonthetribologicalbehaviorofthecoatingsmustbeinvestigated.
Thestabilityandcorrosionresistanceofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsmustalsobeevaluated.Mechanicalpartsoftenoperateinharshenvironmentsthatcancauseerosion,corrosion,oroxidationofthesurface.Thecoatingsmustwithstandtheseharshconditionstobepracticalandeffectiveinindustrialapplications.
Furthermore,thecompatibilityofthecoatedsurfaceswithdifferentoillubricantsneedstobeinvestigatedtodeterminetheoptimalchoiceoflubricant.Coatingcompatibilitycanhaveasignificantinfluenceonthewearandfrictionpropertiesofthecoatedsurfaces.
Finally,thecost-effectivenessofthefastnickelplatingcoatingsmustbeconsideredinindustrialsettings.Theelectropla
