耶魯大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)蘇必德2018年8月25日周六Goodmorning!Onbehalfofmycolleagueshereonstage,Iextendawarmwelcometoallthefamilymemberswithustoday.Andtothefirst-years,transferstudents,andEliWhitneystudents:WelcometoYale!大家早上好,在此我謹(jǐn)代表各位同事向2022屆的本科新生們、轉(zhuǎn)校生們以及EliWhitney項(xiàng)目的學(xué)生們表示最誠(chéng)摯的歡迎。歡迎來(lái)到耶魯!Todayisadayofpageantryandexcitement.Manyofyoubringmembersofyourextendedfamiliestocheeryouon,celebratingthismilestonewithjustifiableprideandjustalittleanxiety.今天是激動(dòng)人心的一天,也是值得慶祝的一天。你們中的許多人今天和家人一起來(lái)到現(xiàn)場(chǎng),帶著自豪和一絲緊張,一起來(lái)慶祝人生中的這一重要里程碑。TodayisalsoadayofYaletraditions.Youwillencountercountlesswonderfulritualshere,somerecentandsomequiteold.Manyaresteepedinhistoryyetremainpopular,evenbeloved,amongYalies.(Andremember,youarenowaYalie!)今天也是耶魯諸多傳統(tǒng)中的一天。你們將看到很多精彩的儀式,有些是近幾年才開(kāi)始的,有些則相當(dāng)古老。許多歷史悠久的儀式,至今仍然相當(dāng)流行,深受耶魯人喜愛(ài)。當(dāng)然,現(xiàn)在在座的你們也是耶魯人!OneofourYaletraditionsissinginganoldsong,“BrightCollegeYears.”Writteninthe19thcentury,itisourunofficial,butwidelyacknowledged,almamater.Youwillhearitatmanycampusevents,oftensungbytheYaleGleeClubandotherYalegroups,andplayedbytheYalePrecisionMarchingBandafterfootballgames.耶魯?shù)膫鹘y(tǒng)之一是唱一首古老的歌曲,叫BrightCollegeYears《美好校園年華》。它誕生于19世紀(jì)晚期,雖然是非官方的歌曲,卻受到廣泛認(rèn)可。你將在許多校園活動(dòng)中聽(tīng)到這首歌,通常是由耶魯合唱團(tuán)或其他耶魯團(tuán)體演唱,或是在美式橄欖球比賽后由耶魯大學(xué)儀仗隊(duì)進(jìn)行演奏。Now,Iamnotasinger.Iamabluegrassbassplayer.ButIhopeyouwillindulgemeforamoment:當(dāng)然,我不是個(gè)歌手。我其實(shí)是一名藍(lán)草貝斯手。但現(xiàn)在,我希望你們能允許我給大家小唱一段:Theseasonscome,theseasonsgo,Theearthisgreenorwhitewithsnow,ButtimeandchangeshallnaughtavailTobreakthefriendshipsformedatYale.春去秋來(lái),花落花開(kāi)碧綠草地,轉(zhuǎn)瞬皚皚星斗雖移,世事或遷耶魯情誼,堅(jiān)固永遠(yuǎn)Thesecoupletsaresomeofmyfavoritesfrom/“BrightCollegeYears,”and,inmyexperience,theyaretruthful.Isuspecttheywillproveaccurateforyouaswell.Butitisthesong’sfinallines,popularatalumnigatheringsandalwayssungwithgusto,completewiththewavingofhandkerchiefs,thatIwanttousetolaunchmytopicfortoday:這是《美好校園年華》歌詞中我最喜歡的一段,也是相當(dāng)真切的一段。我相信有一天你們也會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)這段話的道理。但是我想用來(lái)開(kāi)始今天演講主題的,是這首歌的最后幾行,也就是在校友聚會(huì)中深受歡迎且被多次傳唱的一段:Oh,letusstrivethateverweMayletthesewordsourwatchcrybe,Where'eruponlife'sseawesail:“ForGod,forCountryandforYale!”努力奮發(fā),一如從前相與相勉,牢記箴言鼓勇?lián)P帆,滄海征途為主為國(guó),也為耶魯“ForGod,forCountry,andforYale:”AmemberoftheYaleCollegeClassof1881namedHenryDurandwrotethisballad,andthefinallinesweremeanttobearallyingcry.Itmadesenseinthosedaystopresume,asDuranddid,thatmostYalestudentsshared,oratleastprofessedtoshare,thesamegodandthesamecountry.MostYalies,untilrecentdecades,werewhite,Protestant,andAmerican.Andofcourse,untilfiftyyearsagoinYaleCollege,theywereallmen.“為主為國(guó),也為耶魯?!边@首歌是耶魯大學(xué)1881屆一位名叫HenryDurand的學(xué)生所作,最后這一段歌詞是為了號(hào)召大家團(tuán)結(jié)奮發(fā)。在當(dāng)時(shí),像HenryDurand一樣,大多數(shù)的耶魯學(xué)生都來(lái)自同一個(gè)國(guó)家,信奉同一宗教。甚至到本世紀(jì)上半葉,大多數(shù)耶魯人都是白人、新教徒且來(lái)自美國(guó)本土。直到50年前,耶魯學(xué)生甚至全部為男性。Today,YaleisadifferentplacefromthecollegeDurandknew.Wewelcomepeoplefromaroundtheworld,fromeverybackgroundandfromeverywalkoflife.當(dāng)然,今天的耶魯早已不再是當(dāng)時(shí)HenryDurand所認(rèn)識(shí)的那所大學(xué)。我們歡迎來(lái)自世界各地的學(xué)生,不論背景,不分階層。IamproudtobeaYalegraduate.IreceivedmyPh.D.inpsychologyfromYalein1986.Ahundredyearsearlier,ImayhavebeenlesslikelytohavebeenadmittedtoYaleonaccountofmybackground;IamJewish,withrootsinEasternEurope.MywifeMarta,anotherproudYalegraduate,receivedhermaster'sdegreeinpublichealthin1984;herfamilyisfromPuertoRico.Ourstoriesarenotunique.Overthepastdecades,Yalehasopeneditsdoorswiderandwider.Wehaveexpandedthecircleofbelonging.作為耶魯大學(xué)的畢業(yè)生,我感到很自豪。1986年,我在耶魯大學(xué)獲得心理學(xué)博士學(xué)位。如果在一百年前,我很可能由于我的背景而無(wú)法被耶魯大學(xué)錄取。我是來(lái)自東歐的猶太人,我的妻子Marta也是一位耶魯畢業(yè)生,她于1984年獲得公共衛(wèi)生碩士學(xué)位,而她的家族來(lái)自波多黎各。我們的故事無(wú)獨(dú)有偶。過(guò)去幾十年,耶魯大學(xué)的校門為全球?qū)W生敞開(kāi),我們組成了一個(gè)更大、更包容的大家庭。Yetdespiteourdifferencesanddiversity,wehaveatleastoneveryimportantthingincommon:weallshareYale.Nomatterwhereyouarefrom,orwhoyouare,oryourpathtoarrivinghere,nowyouare—amongotherthings—amemberofthiscommunity.Youbelonghere.YouarecitizensofYale.盡管我們之間存在著差異和多樣性,但是我們有一個(gè)非常重要的共同點(diǎn):我們都共享著耶魯大學(xué)。無(wú)論你們來(lái)自哪里,無(wú)論你們是誰(shuí),也無(wú)論你們?nèi)绾芜~入耶魯大門,現(xiàn)在,相較于其他身份,你們更是這個(gè)社區(qū)的成員。你們屬于這里。你們,都是耶魯公民。Inourcountryandourworldtoday,questionsaboutcitizenshipandimmigrationarehotlycontested.ButatYale,wesharenoneofthisuncertaintyaboutthecriticalimportanceofimmigrantandinternationalstudentsandscholars.Theworkoftheuniversity—educationandresearch—requiresthefreemovementofpeopleandideasacrossnationalborders.Onbehalfofthisuniversity,Iadvocateforpoliciesthatwillallowustowelcomestudentsandscholarsfromaroundtheworldtoourcampus.在我們的國(guó)家,乃至當(dāng)今世界,關(guān)于公民身份和移民問(wèn)題的爭(zhēng)論非常激烈。但在耶魯,我們對(duì)移民和國(guó)際學(xué)生學(xué)者的重要性沒(méi)有任何質(zhì)疑。大學(xué)的教育和研究工作需要人類及其思想在國(guó)家之間自由流動(dòng)。代表這所大學(xué),我歡迎來(lái)自世界各地的學(xué)生和學(xué)者來(lái)到我們的校園。OurYalecitizenship,however,isnotbasedonnationalorigin.Ourstudentshailfrom121countries.Norisitbasedonouradherencetoacertainsetofb
