GothicStyle

TheGothicstyleisgenerallycharacterizedbyextensiveslendernessofthearchitecturalforms.isoftenidentifiedwithsuchconstructionaldevicesasrose/stained-glasswindows,pointedarches,ribbedvaults,andflyingbuttresses(brickorstonearchedsupportsbuiltagainsttheoutsidewalls).However,bothpointedarchesandribbedvaultswerepresentintheRomanesquestyle,whichthrivedduringthe1000’sandtheearly1100’s.

ThedifferencebetweenRomanesqueandGothicstylesisthewayinwhichspaceisconceived.SpaceinaRomanesquebuildingisachievedbyaddingbays,unitbyunit,tocreatethetotalspace.Thisisinpartbecauseofsquareschematismandalternate-supportsystem.ButaGothicbuildingisconceivedasatotalspacethatissubdividedintounits.Thespacedoesnotseemascompartmentalizedandthenaveseemslikeamorecontinuousspace.Avasthallilluminatedandtransformedbyglowing,mysticlight.
