Thelessonwastobegin.Thepoorfellow,whosegreatfaultlayinadeeptoneddrawlofhissyllableandtheomissionofhisstops,stoodhalflookingatthebook,andhalfcastinghiseyetowardstherightofhim,whencetheblowsweretoproceed.Themasterlookedoverhim,andhishandwasready.Iamnotexactinmyquotationatthisdistanceoftime;butthespiritofoneofthepassagesthatIrecollectwastothefollowingpurport,andthusdidtheteacherandhispupilproceed:
