Plot

Ayoungwoman,namedSarahConnor,isinexplicablybeinghuntedbyarelentlesskiller,playedbySchwarzenegger,whoisapparentlytrackingdownandkillingeverywomaninthecitywhosharesConnor'sname.SheiseventuallyapproachedbyKyleReese,playedbyBiehn,whoexplainsthatinthefuture,anartificialintelligencecalled"Skynet"willbecreatedbymilitarysoftwaredeveloperstomakestrategicdecisions,butunexpectedlybecomesself-aware;inapanic,thehumansattempttodestroySkynet.Intheinterestofself-preservation,Skynetseizescontrolofmostoftheworld'smilitaryhardware(includingvarioushighlyadvancedrobots),andlaunchesanall-outthermonuclearattackonhumanity,leadingtoatotalwarbetweenmanandmachine.However,amannamedJohnConnoreventuallyleadsthehumanresistancetovictory,onlytodiscoverthatinalast-ditcheffort,SkynethaddiscoveredtimetravelandsentaTerminator,ahighlyadvancedrobotickiller,backintimetothe1980stokillJohnConnor'smotherbeforehecanbeborn.JohnisSarah'sfutureson,andsohesendsbackReese,atrustedperson,toprotecthismotheratallcosts.

ThekeydifficultyinReese'smissionisthattheTerminator,variablyidentifiedasacyborgorrobot,isofanextremelydurableconstructionthatcansustainaconsiderableamountofdamage.Sincethetimetravelmechanismprecludesthetravelerfromcarryingnon-livingmatteroutsidethebeing'sbody,Reesewasforcedtoarrivenakedandunarmed,andthesmallarmsofthe1980sarebarelypowerfulenoughtoaffecttheTerminator;ReeseisluckythattheshotgunhestealsfromapolicecarisstrongenoughjusttoknocktheTerminatordown.Furthermore,aTerminator'sorganiccovering,whenintact,makesitindistinguishablefromanaverageperson.ThismakesitalmostimpossibletoconvinceanyoneofSarahConnor'stimethatthisassailantisactuallyanextremelyadvancedmachine.

Uponitsarrivalin1984,theTerminatorquicklyobtainsclothesandanarsenalofweaponry,andsetsoutonitsmission.Itsystematicallymurdersthefirsttwo'SarahConnors'intheLosAngelestelephonedirectorybeforekillingSarah'sflatmateGingerandGinger'sboyfriendwhiletryingtofindSarahatherhome.ItthendiscoversthatSarahisinanightclubcalledTechNoirwheresheiswaitingforthepolice.TheTerminatorattemptstokillSarahinthenightclub,butisstoppedbyReese.Followingabriefchase,ReeseandSarahescape,buttheTerminatorviolentlycommandeersapolicecarandfollowsthem.

Whilehidinginamulti-storyparkinggarage,Reeseexplainseverythingtoaskeptical,frightenedSarah.However,theTerminatorarrivesagainandapitchedgunbattlebetweenthetwomovingvehiclesresultsintheTerminatorcrashingitscarandReesebeingarrestedbythepursuingcops.Atthepolicestation,SarahislookedafterbyLieutenantTraxler(PaulWinfield)andSergeantVukovich(LanceHenriksen)whileReeseisinterrogatedbyafascinatedcriminalpsychologist,Dr.Silberman(EarlBoen),whoconcludesthatReese's"delusions"areastoundinglyintricateandareconstructedinsuchamannerthattheyrequirenoproofandarethussafefromrefutation.DuringthistimetheTerminatorretreatstoahotelroomandperformsmaintenanceonitsdamagedcyborgarmandeyesocketbeforere-armingitselfandheadingforthepoliceprecinct.

TheTerminatorarrivesattheprecinctonlytobetoldbythedesksergeantthathecannotseeSarah.Afterutteringhisfamouslow-keycatchphrase"I'llbeback",hedrivesacarthroughthedoorsofthebuilding,crushingthedesksergeant.Hethenproceedstostormtheprecinct,shootinghiswaythroughthepanickingcops.ReesemeanwhilemanagestobreakfreeandrescueSarahbeforetheTerminatorcangettoher.

WhileReeseishidingthatnightwithSarah,weseehispast(thefuture)inaflashback.Inthispost-nuclearworld,weseethatheoncehadaPolaroidphotographofSarah.ThephotoisburnedduringanattackbyaTerminatoronahumanbase.

Thenextday,ReeseandSarahtakerefugeinamotel,whereReesemakespipebombs,teachingSarahhowtomaketheexplosivefromhouseholdsupplies.SarahasksReeseifhe'sdisappointedinher(therealhercomparedtothelegendsandstoriesabouther)andasksifhe'severhadalover;herepliesnotobothquestions.ReesealsoconfessesthatheisinlovewithSarah.Atfirst,Reesethinkshehasmadeafoolofhimselfandtriestoshutoffhisemotionsfromher,butSarahreciprocateshisfeelingsandkisseshimtenderly,andtheymakelove.Laterthatnight,theTerminatortracksthemdownandpursuesthemalongamotorway,shootingReeseandwoundinghim.AnincreasinglyresourcefulSarahmanagestoknockitoffitsmotorcycle,butshecrasheshertruck.TheTerminatorcommandeersalargetankertruckanddrivesittowardsthepair'swreckedpickuptruck.Sarahandabadly-woundedReeseescapejustintimeandReesedestroysthetankerwithoneofhisfewremainingbombs.TheTerminatorisshowncollapsinginaburntheapintheremainsofthetanker.

JustwhentheythinktheTerminatorhasbeendestroyed,itsmetalendoskeletonemergesfromtheflames,andpursuesthemintoanautomatedfactory.Intheensuingstandoff,Reesejamsapipebombbetweenitsabdominalpistonandspine,successfullyblowingtheTerminatorintoseveralpieces.ReeseiskilledintheensuingexplosionwhichonlysucceedsinpartiallyimmobilizingtheTerminator.JustasSarahfindsReese'sbody,theTerminator'smangledtorsorevivesandpursuesher,butshemanagestocrushitinahydraulicpress.

TheendofthefilmseesSarahtravelinginMexico,severalmonthspregnant.Sherecordsaudiotapeswhichsheintendstoplaytothechild(clearlythesoon-to-be-bornJohn)atsomepointinhislife.HermonologuesrevealthatReeseisthefather,andthatJohnwasconceivedduringtheironenighttogetheratthemotel.WhileSarah'sgastankisbeingfilledatagasstation,ayoungMexicanboytakesaphotoofherusinghisPolaroidcamera,andtalksherintobuyingitforafewdollars.WeseethatitisthesamephotoReesewillhaveinthefuture.Theboythenmentionsthatthereisastormcoming,towhichSarahchillinglyreplies"Iknow."Calmbutdetermined,Sarahdrivesoffintoanominousfuture.

Inspirations

SomeaspectsofthestoryweresufficientlysimilartotwoepisodesoftheTVseriesTheOuterLimits—bothepisodeswrittenbyHarlanEllison—thatEllisonpursuedlegalactionagainstCameron.CameronsettledoutofcourtandacknowledgedEllison'sworkinthefilm'scredits.However,sometimelater,thecreditsweremysteriouslytakenout(rumoredtohavebeenremovedbyCameronhimself).Anotherlawsuitwasfileduntilthecreditwasreinserted.

Theepisodesinquestionwerecalled"Soldier"(whichinvolvesaspecially-trainedmanaccidentallysentbackintime)and"DemonwithaGlassHand"(concerningatimetravelerwhosuffersmemorylossandreliesonacomputerchipimplantedinhisartificialhandtogivehiminformationabouthismissionwhileassassinssentfromthefutureattempttokillhim).ThereisalsosomesimilaritybetweentheconceptofSkynetandtheevilintelligencefeaturedinEllison'sshortstory,"IHaveNoMouth,andIMustScream".

Despitesettlingoutofcourt,CameronstillmaintainstothisdaythattheTerminatorwashisoriginalconcept.HeclaimsthattheconceptoftheTerminatorcametohiminadream;furthermore,hestatesthatinhisoriginalvision,theTerminatorwasasmall,unremarkableman(asopposedtothelarge,muscularappearanceofactorArnoldSchwarzenegger).ThiswouldallowtheTerminatorevengreaterabilitytoconcealitselfamongthehumanpopulation.OnlywhenSchwarzenegger,whohadoriginallyauditionedfortheroleofReese,wascastastheTerminatorinsteaddidthisconceptbegintochange.

ThestoryalsobearsstrongresemblancetotwoshortstoriesbyPhilipK.Dick:"SecondVariety"(1953)and"Jon'sWorld"(1954).Thesestoriesfeatureapost-apocalypticworldwhererobots(originallydesignedtofightonbehalfofonehumanfactionagainstanother)developnewermodelswhichdisguisethemselvesashumanstoinfiltratehumanbunkersbelongingtobothfactions.

Anotherpotentialinspirationisthewell-regarded1962Frenchfilm,LaJetée,ashortblackandwhitefilmbydirectorChrisMarker.Toldentirelyinstillimagesandnarration,thefilmconcernsamaninanundergroundpost-nuclearfuturesentbackintothepre-apocalypticpasttoobtainresourcesnecessarytocontinuehumanity.Themanisselectedforhismissionbecausehisfixationonamemoryfromthatperiod,inwhichheseesabeautifulwomanandamandying.Thefilmconcludes,asTheTerminatordoes,withapredestinationparadox;whileinthepast,themanfallsinlovewithawomanwhobearsastrikingresemblancetothewomaninhismemory,andthenfulfillshisowndestinybybecomingtheverymanhewitnesseddying,thusenablinghimtotravelbackin
