eofthebestdecisionsievermade.theminuteidroppedouticouldstoptakingtherequiredclassesthatdidn’tinterestmeandbegindroppinginontheonesthatlookedfarmoreinteresting.itwasn’tallromantic,ididn’thaveadormroom,soisleptonthefloorinfriends’rooms.ireturnedcokebottlesforthefive-centdepositstobuyfoodwithandiwouldworkthesevenmilesacrossthetowneverysundaynighttogetonegoodmealaweekattheharekrishnatemple.ilovedit.andmuchofwhatistumbledintobyfollowingmycuriosityandintuitionturnedouttobepricelesslateron.letmegiveyouoneexample.reedcollegeatthattimeofferedperhapsthebestcalligraphyinstructioninthecountry.throughoutthecampuseverypostereverylabeloneverydrawerwasbeautifulhandcalligraphed.becauseihavedroppedoutanddidn’thavetotakethenormalclasses.idecidedtotakeacalligraphyclasstolearnhowtodothis.ilearnedaboutserifandsan-seriftypefacesaboutvaryingtheamountofspacebetweendifferentletterbinations,aboutwhatmakesgreattypographygreat.itwasbeautiful,historical,artisticallysubtleinawaythatsciencecan’tcapture,andifounditfascinating.noneofthishadevenahopeofanypracticalapplicationinmylife.buttenyearslater,whenweweredesigningthefirstmacintoshputer,itallcamebacktome,andwedesigneditallintothemac.itwasthefirstputerwithbeautifultypography.ifihadneverdroppedinonthatsinglecourseincollege,themacwouldhaveneverhadmultipletypefacesorproportionallyspacefonts,andsincewindowscopiedthemac,it’slikelythatnopersonalputerwouldhavethem.ifihadneverdroppedout,iwouldneverdroppedinonthatcalligraphyclassandpersonalsputermightnothavethewonderfultypographythattheydo.ofcourse,itwasimpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwheniwasincollege,butitwasveryveryclearlookingbackwards10yearslater.again,youcan’tconnectthedotslookingforward,youcanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards.soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.youhavetotrustinsomething,yougut,destiny,life,karma,whatever,becausebelievingthatthedotswillconnectdowntheroad,willgiveyoutheconfidencetofollowyourheart,evenwhenitleadsyouoffthewellwornpath.andthatwouldmakeallthedifference.mythirdstoryisaboutdeath.wheniwasseventeen,ireadaquotethatwentsomethinglike“ifyouliveeachdayasifitwasyourlast,somedayyou’llmostcertainlyberight.”itmadeanimpressiononme,andsincethen,forthepast33years,ihavelookedinthemirroreverymorningandaskedmyself“iftodaywerethelastdayofmylife,wouldiwanttodowhatiamabouttodotoday?”andwhenevertheanswerhasbeen“no”fortoomanydaysinarow,iknowineedtochangesomething.rememberingthati’llbedeadsoonisthemostimportantthingi’veeverencounteredtohelpmemakethebigchoicesinlife.becausealmosteverything,allexternalexpectation,allpride,allfearofembarrassmentoffailure,thesethingsjustfallawayinthefaceofdeath,leavingonlywhatistrulyimportant.rememberingwhatyouaregoingtodieisthebestwayiknowtoavoidthetrapofthinkingyouhavesomethingtolose.youarealreadynaked.thereisnoreasonnottofollowyourheart.aboutayearago,iwasdiagnosedwithcancer,ihadascanat7:30inthemorning,anditclearlyshoweratumormypancreas,ididn’tevenknowwhatapancreaswas,thedoctorstoldmethiswasalmostcertainlyatypeofcancerthatisincurable,andthatishouldexpecttolivenolongerthanthreetosixmonths.mydoctoradvisedmetogohomeandgetmyaffairsinorder,whichisdoctors’codefor“preparetodie”.itmeanstotryandtellyourkidseverythingyouthoughtyou’dhavethenexttenyearstotelltheminjustafewmonths.itmeanstomakesurethateverythingisbuttonedup,sothatitwillbeaseasyaspossibleforyourfamily.itmeanstosayyourgoodbyes.ilivedwiththatdiagnosisallday.laterthateveningihadabiopsy,wheretheystuckonendoscopedownmythroat,throughmystomachintomyintestines,putaneedleintomypancreasandgotafewcellsfromthetumor.iwassedated,butmywife,whowasthere,toldmethattheyviewedthecellsunderamicroscope,thedoctorstartedcrying,becauseitturnedouttobeaveryrareformofpancreaticcancer,thatiscurablewithsurgery,ihadthesurgeryand,thankfully,iamfin
