WehavefoundthatthereisamajorobstaclethatparentsneedtoovercomeinconnectionwithTVviewing.Surprisinglyenough,wearegoingtoadvocatethatparentsactrudely--atleastasfarastheTVsetisconcerned.Mostofushavebeensocializedallourliveswiththewarning"Don'tinterruptwhensomeoneelseisspeaking."Yetourancestorsneverimaginedamechanicalvisitorsittinginthemiddleofourhomewhotalkswithoutstopandneverallowsthelisteneranopportunitytoputawordinedgewise.

Duringourresearch,wefounduponquestioningparentsthattheyusuallyreactedtoTVcontenttheydislikedordisagreedwithbyremainingsilent.Thisbringstomindanoldsayingthatparentsmightwellbeadvisedtoconsider,"Silencegivesconsent."

WeadvocateloudreactionsandexclamationsofdisapprovalwhensomethingispresentedonTVwhichisinoppositiontothefamily'svaluesoroffendstheminanyway.Similarly,whenaprogramisinaccordancewiththefamily'sviews,parentsshouldapproveofitscontent--andapplaudloudly.ThereismuchthatShakespeareanaudiencescouldteachusallinregardtosuchspontaneous,publicreactions.Silenceismisleadingtoourchildren.

Thisprocessofdirectintervention--vocalapprovalordisapprovalofTVcontent--ishighlyeffectivewithyoungchildren,becausetheyarecurious,learningrapidly,andreadytoplaceagreatdealofconfidenceintheinformationandattitudesoftheirparentsandothersignificantadults,suchasteachers.Forteenagers,indirectinterventionisrecommended,becausethisgroupismoreresistanttoadultstatementsanddoesnotliketobe"lectured".IndirectinterventionisthepracticeofmakingcommentsaboutTVtoothermembersofthefamily,butinsuchawaythattheteenagerissuretooverhearthecomments.

Ourresearchshowsthatthroughsuchparentalcommentsofapprovalordisapproval,adultscandramaticallyinfluencetheinformationtheirchildrenreceiveandretainfromwatchingTV.
