assuredofgrowthandprofits.

Andit'snoaccidentthatyouthisincreasinglypromoted,alongwiththinness,asanessential

criterionofbeauty.Ifnotallwomenneedtoloseweight,forsurethey'reallaging,saysthe

QuebecActionNetworkforWomen'sHealthinits2001report.And,accordingtotheindustry,

ageisadisasterthatneedstobedealtwith.

Thestakesarehuge.Ontheonehand,womenwhoareinsecureabouttheirbodiesaremore

likelytobuybeautyproducts,newclothes,anddietaids.Itisestimatedthatthedietindustryalone

isworthanywherebetween40to100billion(U.S.)ayearsellingtemporaryweightloss(90to

95%ofdietersregainthelostweight).Ontheotherhand,researchindicatesthatexposureto

imagesofthin,young,air-brushedfemalebodiesislinkedtodepression,lossofself-esteemand

thedevelopmentofunhealthyeatinghabitsinwomenandgirls.

TheAmericanresearchgroupAnorexiaNervosa&RelatedEatingDisorders,Inc.saysthat

oneoutofeveryfourcollege-agedwomenusesunhealthymethodsofweightcontrol—including

fasting,skippingmeals,excessiveexercise,laxative(瀉藥)abuse,andself-inducedvomiting.The

pressuretobethinisalsoaffectingyounggirls:theCanadianWomen'sHealthNetworkwarnsthat

weightcontrolmeasuresarenowbeingtakenbygirlsasyoungas5and6.Americanstatisticsare

similar.Severalstudies,suchasoneconductedbyMarikaTiggemannandLevinaClarkin2006

titled"AppearanceCultureinNine-to12-Year-OldGirls:MediaandPeerInfluencesonBody

Dissatisfaction,indicatethatnearlyhalfofallpreadolescentgirlswishtobethinner,andasa

resulthaveengagedinadietorareawareoftheconceptofdieting.In2003,Teenmagazine

reportedthat35percentofgirls6to12yearsoldhavebeenonatleastonediet,andthat50to70

percentofnormalweightgirlsbelievetheyareoverweight.Overallresearchindicatesthat90%of

womenaredissatisfiedwiththeirappearanceinsomeway.

MediaactivistJeanKilbourneconcludesthat,“Womenaresoldtothedietindustrybythe

magazineswereadandthetelevisionprogramswewatch,almostallofwhichmakeusfeel

anxiousaboutourweight.^^

UnattainableBeauty

Perhapsmostdisturbingisthefactthatmediaimagesoffemalebeautyareunattainablefor

allbutaverysmallnumberofwomen.Researchersgeneratingacomputermodelofawomanwith

Barbie-dollproportions,forexample,foundthatherbackwouldbetooweaktosupporttheweight

ofherupperbody,andherbodywouldbetoonarrowtocontainmorethanhalfaliverandafew

centimetersofbowel.Arealwomanbuiltthatwaywouldsufferfromchronicdiarrhea(慢性腹瀉)

andeventuallydiefrommalnutrition.JillBarad,PresidentofMattel(whichmanufacturesBarbie),

estimatedthat99%ofgirlsaged3to10yearsoldownatleastoneBarbiedoll.

Still,thenumberofreallifewomenandgirlswhoseekasimilarlyunderweightbodyis

epidemic,andtheycansufferequallydevastatinghealthconsequences.In2006itwasestimated

thatupto450,000Canadianwomenwereaffectedbyaneatingdisorder.

TheCultureofThinness

Researchersreportthatwomen'smagazineshavetenandone-halftimesmoreadsand

articlespromotingweightlossthanmen'smagazinesdo,andoverthree-quartersofthecoversof

women'smagazinesincludeatleastonemessageabouthowtochangeawoman'sbodily

appearance-bydiet,exerciseorcosmeticsurgery.

Televisionandmoviesreinforcetheimportanceofathinbodyasameasureofawoman's

worth.CanadianresearcherGregoryFoutsreportsthatoverthree-quartersofthefemalecharacters

inTVsituationcomediesareunderweight,andonlyoneintwentyareaboveaverageinsize.

Heavieractressestendtoreceivenegativecommentsfrommalecharactersabouttheirbodies

("Howaboutwearingasack?"),and80percentofthesenegativecommentsarefollowedby

cannedaudiencelaughter.

Therehavebeeneffortsinthemagazineindustrytobuck(抵制,反抗)thetrend.For

severalyearstheQuebecmagazineCoupdePoucehasconsistentlyincludedfull-sizedwomenin

theirfashionpagesandChatelainehaspledgednottotouchupphotosandnottoincludemodels

lessthan25yearsofage.InMadrid,oneoftheworld'sbiggestfashioncapitals,ultra-thinmodels

werebannedfromtherunwayin2006.FurthermoreSpainhasrecentlyundergoneaprojectwith

theaimtostandardizeclothingsizesthroughusingauniqueprocessinwhichalaserbeamisused

tomeasurereallifewomen'sbodiesinordertofindthemosttruetolifemeasurement.

Ethics

Anotherissueistherepresentationofethnicallydiversewomeninthemedia.A2008study

conductedbyJuanitaCovertandTravisDixontitled“AChangingView:Representationand

EffectsofthePortrayalofWomenofColorinMainstreamWomen'sMagazines“foundthat

althoughtherewasanincreaseintherepresentationofwomenofcolour,overallwhitewomen

wereoverrepresentedinmainstreamwomen'smagazinesfrom1999to2004.Self-Improvementor

Self-Destruction?

Thebarrageofmessagesaboutthinness,dietingandbeautytells“ordinary"womenthatthey

arealwaysinneedofadjustment-andthatthefemalebodyisanobjecttobeperfected.

JeanKilbournearguesthattheoverwhelmingpresenceofmediaimagesofpainfullythin

womenmeansthatrealwomen'sbodieshavebecomeinvisibleinthemassmedia.Thereal

tragedy,Kilbourneconcludes,isthatmanywomeninternalizethesestereotypes,andjudge

themselvesbythebeautyindustry'sstandards.Womenlearntocomparethemselvestoother

women,andtocompetewiththemformaleattention.Thisfocusonbeautyanddesirability
