findtherightcareerandbuildafamily,andthesenior\needforsupportandgood

healthcare.

highschoolgraduation,continuesthroughcollege,andthenleadstostartingafamily

andhavingacareer,theso-calledodysseyyears.Recenttrendsshowradicalchanges

asyoungpeoplearefollowingadifferentagenda.Theytakebreaksfromschool,live

withfriendsandoftenreturntolivingwiththeirparents.Similarly,theyfallinandout

oflove,quitonejobandtryanotherorevenshifttoanewcareer.So,weneedto

recognizethisnewstage,theodysseyyears,whichmanynowconsidertobean

unavoidablestageinreachingadulthood.

5.Peoplewhowerebompriortothe60sor70sinthelastcenturytendedtoframe

theirconceptofadulthoodbaseduponachievingcertainaccomplishments:moving

awayfromhome,becomingfinanciallyindependent,findingtherightspouseand

startingafamily.Butthatemphasisonstabilitydidnotremainstatic.Today,young

peopleareunlikelytodothesame.Duringtheodysseyyears,ahighproportionof

youngpeoplearedelayingmamage,childbearing,andevenemployment.

6.Theodysseyyearscansaddleyoungpeoplewithenormouspressuretomove

forwardquickly.Asthesoleheirandfocusoftheirparents9expectations,hopesand

dreams,somereactwithrebelliousandpridefulattitudesandbehaviortowardtheir

parents.Theyoftenresentthepressuretheyarefeelingandkeepadistancefromtheir

parentsorevenrunawayfromhome.Theirconfusioncomesfromthedifficultiesto

makeparentsunderstandthemandthefluidjourneyofdiscoverytheyneedinthis

phaseoftheirlives.Togetawayfromthisconfusionandupset,manyyoungpeople

resorttocomputergames,iPods,iPhones,oriPads,tohelpdistractthemfromtheir

painandstress.

7.Likewise,theirparentsarefeelingmoreanxious.Theymaymakeallowancesfora

transitionphasefromstudentlifetoadultlife,buttheygetupsetwhentheyseethe

transitionoftheirgrownchildren9slivesmovingawayfromtheirexpectationsand

stretchingfiveyearstosevenyears,andbeyond.Theparentsdon'tevendetectaclear

senseofdirectionintheirchildren'slives.Theylookatthemandseethethingsthat

arebeingdelayed.

8.It'shardtopredictwhat'snext.Newguidelineshaven'tbeenestablishedyet,and

everythingseemstogivewaytoalesspermanentversionofitself.There9sbeena

shiftinthestatusandbalanceofpowerbetweenthegenders,too.Morewomenare

gettingdegreesthanmen.Malewageshaveremainedstableoverthepastdecades,

stillholdhighlytraditionalaspirations.Forexample,thiscontemporarygeneration

ratesparenthoodevenmorehighlythanpreviousgenerationsdid!

10.Thisnewphasewilllikelygrowmorepronouncedinthecomingyears.Nations

aroundtheworldhavewitnessedsimilartrendstowarddelayingmarriageand
