CottonMather’smaternalgrandfatherwasJohnCotton,whofortwentyyearswasaministerofSt.BotolphChurchinBoston,Linconshire,England.hewascompelledtogiveuphispostwhenatownsmanchargedthatmagistrateswerenotrequiredtokneelatthesacramentinReverendCotton’schurch.Insometheologicaldisgrace,JohnCottonsetofffortheNewWorld,and,asithappeed,hesailedforAmericawithtwootherministers,ThomasHookerandSamuelStone.Thiswastakentobeagoodomenbyallthree,foroneshipbroughtCottonforclothing,Stoneforbuilding,andHookerforfishing.ReverendCottonpreached
